Hochalega sucks if you're a girl. I lived on the corner of st cathrine and prefontaine and I had a hard time making it anywhere without someone following me or trying to get me in their car. (Or on thier bicycle, lol.) A lot of crack heads and shit there, too. And way too many hookers. I used to see clothing, condoms, spoons, and needles all the time on the street. And the hookers used to hang out on my front step.

I live in the village now, i like it. But there are a lot of bums and sketch drug dealers here. Someone tries to sell me speed every time I walk to berri. But it's not very dangerous. Someone got shot at the McDonalds a little while ago, but I'm sure it was over drugs. Just don't talk to the druggies around here and you're safe.

The french programs outside of Quebec suck ass anyway. My sister was in french immersion, suppose to be pretty much all french, and when she moved here, her french was terrible and she had to take a french course. She's pretty much perfectly bilingual now, but it took a lot of time, marrying a guy who barely spoke english, and living in a small french village in the woods, lol.

I can understand a bit. I haven't had much of a problem yet, although a few people have been short with me. I can't say much, so when people are talking to me, I answer back in english. But I do try. I've been here less than a year and I can understand more than some who have been here for years. Even I feel like I should know more than I do. The ones that refuse are annoying. Don't live here if you have no desire to even TRY to learn the language. I don't get it.

I do miss being able to work anywhere, since all of me experience is in retail and cash and whatnot and I can't really do that here, but I understand why it is harder for me to find work here then it was back home.

A lot of us never had the opportunity to to learn french. I'm pretty sure most algos here aren't from here. It's not our fault, we don't understand that when we're young we should learn french. In adulthood, it's a bit intimidating to try to learn a language from square one (which is where a lot of us start, the french they taught us in school is shit, can't even have a basic convo) I'm not saying we shouldn't learn, because we really should. It opens up a lot of opportunities, not just here, but the rest of Canada, too. There is really no reason for an anglo to live here for a long period of time and not know at least a bit of french. I've met people that have been living here for 6,7,8 years and I know more than them (which is pretty bad) and even met a guy that was born here, but grew up in the west Island, and he can't speak a word of french.....there's really no excuse for that.
