Update » NormanWells wrote on Wed Mar 21, 2007 @ 10:56pm
Screwhead said: The only way to get any really noticable kind of effect that people mistakenly refer to as "phasing" is with 2 copies of a record, and the effect that they call "phasing" is actually "flanging".

And fishead answered: screwhead: it's called phase because when the records are in synch they are "in phase" and if you knock them out of synch, they are "out of phase"... hence you get a flange effect, but you do it by playing around with the phase of the two records.

Taken from Wikipedia:

The phasing effect was originally produced by simply copying the sound onto two analogue tape decks and mixing them together. One tape was run slightly faster than the other, so that one copy of the sound would overtake the other, resulting in a rising then falling effect caused by wave interference. DJs can achieve the same effect by playing two copies of the same record from the same point at the same time.
However, as more practical solid-state electronics and latterly software were used to re-create an approximation of the unwieldy tape-flanging set-up, the term Phasing more specifically refers to a swept comb-filtering effect where there is no linear harmonic relationship between the teeth of the comb (compare this with flanging, where the teeth of the comb-filter are spaced along the frequency spectrum in a linear harmonic series).
A flanger is a subtype of phaser in which the notches are uniformly spaced. In this case, the notches are created by mixing the signal with a delayed version of a signal. Flangers tend to sound more natural, like the "jet plane whoosh" effect, whereas phasers tend to sound more unnatural.

Gotta keep trying new shit, a lot of stuff you would never try unsuspectedly fits together...
Who found out about Wizard of Oz and (is it Dark Side of The Moon? Am I an idiot if I'm wrong?)???

Part of being a good DJ is being able to spend a lot of time experimenting shit. It's the most enjoyable part of the hobby, aside from all the money we all make off it.

I love 80's because a lot of the stuff is made with beatboxes, so it's a lot more steady than a human drummer. New Order/ Blue Monday, Eurythmics/Sweet Dreams, and some other one I'd rather keep secret... mouihihi

To mix better, try to mix non-electronic tracks in your sets, it's a lot harder to miz and will keep your reflexes sharp. What do you think peeps?
Update » NormanWells wrote on Wed Mar 21, 2007 @ 2:17am
Very interesting first page. I'll get into this tomorrow... Great ideas.

I like "despite what some may say... 2 bass lines sounds fuckin HUGE... and you can adjust your mids if it sounds funny."... I don't see a lot of DJs mix 2 bass lines... I personally love to do it, but it doesn't work with any two songs. If the lines are two similar it sounds like there's something wrong with the (seemingly) one bass line that's playing, while 2 very diferent bass lines won't work together and will sound unorganized.

I also like to mix with both crossfader and channels. You can do really neat stuff with the crossfader if you learn to use it properly. Most DJs just refuse to touch it... It's there for a reason, aside from hip-hop scratching.

Hey! Anybody interested in hearing my new stuff, I posted a small mix session I recorded in January and managed to save during my now-epic computer bust. It's got some mistakes, so don't take it too seriously, but it flows kinda well. It's just so you can have a taste before I can finally get that dang PC fixed (as I like to say, Mac is shit and PC is even more shit) and put out a prog demo. Enjoy

They're still paying the rent and own the lease. They can run around naked, bash their heads against the walls, have Satanic rituals and all the fun stuff there is to do. They just can't throw a PARTY in there. I could count the people that were there on friday on my two hands.

I use to go to 1919 William. people bitched. Then I used to go to that 14-18 in the East. People bitched. The I would go to the bingo hall. People bitched. Then I used to go to Level. Guess what? It's getting old.

2 types of partys in my mind:

1-partys almost solely about the music, produced (relatively) safely, no chances of getting busted. You go there because you want to hear music. You're not SUPPOSED to give a shit about being surprised if you plan on going to one of those.

2-raves. It's a whole social experiment, very socialist in its philosophy, and the thrill is just awesome. These have become really hard to throw because of competition. Competition kills socialism. The margin of maneuver is too short.

---Lecture of the Day---

I had it so bad with K that it made me quit drugs. Fortunately I was able to. I still do a pill every 3 to 6 months or so, and I'm a pretty regular pot-smoker, and occasinal heavy-drinker, but after hitting several K bad trips in a row, I gave up on the drug-use and abuse lifestyle. Everything in my life has been going upwards since then. Thank you K, for making me realize tons of stuff.

Oh and while we're talking about it... I got a permanent wound inside my left nostril because of K. It's been (1,2,3???) little less than 3 years since I quit. It's still as bad as it was. It hurts when I twitch my nose. Anyways.

Let the peeps find out for themselves.
