6-Foot Snake Found In N.J. Family's Toilet

POSTED: 7:28 am EDT October 21, 2005
UPDATED: 7:35 am EDT October 21, 2005

A blocked drain at a home in North Plainfield, N.J., led to the discovery of a 6-foot snake in a family's toilet, according to a Local 6 News report.

Pete and Debbie Bias suspected there was a problem with their home's plumbing system after nearly a week of messy backups.

The blockage moved mysteriously from the toilet in the basement to the second-floor bathroom, according to the report.

The couple decided to move the toilet off its base to investigate the problem and found a 6-foot Brazilian Rainbow Boa named "Freddy."

"I called my wife over, she took a look at it and she said, 'Yeah, it looks like we have a snake in the drain,'" Pete Bias said.

Police called in a local pet store owner Craig Ost to remove the reptile.

"Luckily I grabbed it by the head," Ost said. "If I grabbed it by the tail, the thing probably would have scurried down the drain."

It was not determined how Freddy wound up in the toilet but the Bias family suspects it entered the home through the sewer system.

Manage Alerts | What Is This? ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) -- A 93-year-old driver apparently suffering from dementia fatally struck a pedestrian and drove for three miles with the man's body through his windshield, police said.

Ralph Parker was stopped after he drove through a tollbooth on the Sunshine Skyway, Traffic Homicide Investigator Michael Jockers said. The toll taker called police, he said.

Parker was not likely to face charges because he did not appear to know what happened or where he was, said Bruce Bartlett, chief assistant in the Pinellas-Pasco County State Attorney's Office.

"He may have somewhere in his mind have realized it was a crash, but immediately forgot about it," Jockers said.

The victim's leg was severed in the Wednesday night crash, police said. The man, whose name was not released, was 52.

Parker had renewed his license in 2003.

"That was the one thing he had, to get in his car and just drive for the sheer enjoyment of driving," Jockers said. Parker lived alone after his wife died in 1998, authorities said.

Man's House Found Filled With 300 Birds

Email this Story

Oct 13, 4:35 PM (ET)

By The Associated Press

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) - A man found operating on a pigeon that he sedated with vodka was later arrested after animal control officers raided his house and discovered about 300 living and dead birds inside.

"There's droppings everywhere," Patrick Wren, the head of Torrance's animal control department, said Wednesday. "I'm wearing a mask. That says it all."

About 120 dead pigeons filled bags and boxes alongside Gerard Redmond Enright Jr.'s home, officials said. Other birds in pet carriers throughout the house were euthanized because they were sick or malnourished, Wren said.

County health officials declared the home unfit for humans.

Enright, 61, who was arrested for investigation of animal abuse, denied mistreating the birds. He said he had devoted his life to saving them.

"I'm literally in shock," said Enright, who often walks with his pigeon, Twister, to a local Starbucks.

Police said animal control officers went to Enright's home in a Los Angeles suburb after getting complaints from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Enright acknowledged operating to remove a large tumor from the bird, saying he watched his own veterinarian perform such a procedure. He said he gave the bird a shot of vodka before operating.

Woman charged with cutting open pregnant neighbor to steal baby had bassinet in trailer

By RAMESH SANTANAM
ASSOCIATED PRESS

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 13 — A woman accused of cutting her pregnant neighbor's belly with a knife in an attempt to steal her baby had a bassinet and a baby swing waiting at her home, police say.
Peggy Jo Conner, 38, was arraigned Thursday on charges of attempted homicide and aggravated assault and jailed without bail.
''Clearly, she was expecting a child coming in shortly,'' prosecutor Scott Andreassi said. ''There's nothing to indicate she was pregnant.''
The attack Wednesday on Valerie Oskin was stopped before her baby was taken because a teenager on an all-terrain vehicle came across the women, police said.
Oskin, 30, underwent an emergency Caesarean section at a hospital. State police said Thursday she was in critical condition and her baby in stable condition. She was believed to have been eight months pregnant, authorities said.
Thomas Wilks, who says he is Conner's husband but is separated from her, called the allegations against her ''impossible'' and said she truly was pregnant.
''I got a sonogram saying she is pregnant,'' Wilks told reporters. ''I felt the baby kick in her stomach.'' He added that Conner is the mother of three children, ages 16, 14 and 11.
Conner and Oskin had a ''close friendship,'' Wilks said. ''It was getting closer as the days went by. They were pregnant together. They were helping each other out.''
The assault began Wednesday morning, when Conner hit Oskin several times with a bat, Andreassi said. Conner then put Oskin and Oskin's 7-year-old son in her car, dropped the boy off at a family member's house and drove the pregnant woman about 15 miles to a secluded area about 50 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, Andreassi said.
There, Conner cut Oskin about six to eight inches across her abdomen with a razor knife, authorities said.
''She was sliced over an old (Caesarean) scar and severely bleeding,'' Trooper Jonathan Bayer said.
A 17-year-old boy on an ATV spotted Conner kneeling next to the pregnant woman on the ground, Bayer said. ''The accused said they didn't need any help and everything was OK,'' he said.
Andreassi said the teen saw the women about 5 p.m. and drove home to tell his father, who returned with him to the scene and found Conner and Oskin still there. The father and son left and at about 7 p.m. called police, who arrived a short time later and arrested Conner.
The prosecutor could not explain why it took so long for the boy and his father, who were not identified, to alert authorities.
Andreassi said a search of Conner's trailer uncovered a bassinet, baby swing and other baby items.
A call to Conner's home went unanswered Thursday afternoon. State police said they did not know if she had a lawyer.
Last December, Bobbie Jo Stinnett, who was eight months pregnant, was strangled at her Missouri home, and her baby was cut from her womb. Prosecutors said Lisa Montgomery showed the baby off as her own before her arrest. She is awaiting trial.
