Science isn't supposed to have any ideological leanings, there isn't a 'republican' way of designing an aircraft engine, like wise there isn't 'social democrat' way of doing open heart surgery...The only way these things can be done is based on effective scientific understandings of the underlying disciplines (in this case engineering and medicine)

i'll give you another interesting example of science that was done (in this case I guess not done)...The soviet union did not believe in genetics and in fact found the whole science distasteful (it clashed with their marxism for reasons i don't want to get in to here but can be easily looked up) The consequences of this were dramatic...First and foremost when they finally eased up on this prohibition in the 60s they were decades behind the west and other nations in this field of science...Another bizarre consequences related to the agricultural sciences, in Stalinist times the ministry of agriculture of the soviet union was busy trying to (and i shit you not) 'train' wheat to grow in harsher colder climates...of course this was a costly failure and could easily have been remedy by a few applications of principles of heredity in plants. This is what I mean by polluting our science with ideology...They could not admit that there was anything like 'heredity' in plants because it ran against their ideology.

You say even i use scientific notions to defend my ideology, i shouldn't and I shouldn't be applauded for doing so...

i said earlier that i am feeling ideologically homeless, I wasn't kidding, i don't call myself libertarian and i have abandoned the austrian school of economics...I still hate the left (or at least large parts of it) so...ya...feeling a little a drift at sea these days...

the important thing to remember is that in a certain sense nature is very newtonian (or Democratian if you prefer someone from ancient greece)...that is to say that all that nature is can be summed up as 'matter and the void' (atoms tumbling in space)...so given this then we can see the world in somewhat nominalist terms, all the universe can be described as a bunch of junk effectively. The reason there is no balance of nature is two fold 1) there is no balance in the sense that everything is in flux, forever changing. 2) even if there was balance what would keep it in balance what force or agency would do that???? (god maybe, ohhh that's gonna be problematic for the atheist amongst us), the truth is no such force or agency exists...

think about it other terms if you like

if there really was a 'balance of nature' that would violate long held Newtonian principles concerning, energy, enthropy and order.

to be brief everyone knows that the universe moves from order to chaos...that is a consequence of enthropy...think about it, if you have a bucket with a divider in it and one side holds water with red coloring in it and the other blue...when you remove the divider the colors mix and absent some agency or exterior force they will continue to mix together until you have an equal distribution of red particles and blue particles which will in all likely hood lead to purple water. Now what's interesting is if you set a camera up and film what happens after you remove the divider and continue to film it (forever if necessary) it is very very very unlikely that at some point through the random movements of the particles that you will get a distribution that resembles your original set up (half blue half red) even for 1/100th of a second...but why? Because things tend to go from more organized to less organized...Think about your own house, does it ever happen that you come home and it's randomely cleaner than when it was when you left it. Never, your floor or bathroom always moves from being clean to dirty never the other way around unless you or someone else forces it to (ie expends energy)...

all i am saying to people here is that you are free to continue to be an environmentalist, to coninue to want to protect the environment from degredation but don't base it on sham bogus ontology and metaphysics. There is no balance of nature because no one is keeping it in balance...

I think people on the left need to be very careful with things like this ( and i say this as someone who is feeling very ideologically homeless these days) You can't base social policy on fake science, it doesn't work, and if your not careful you can go to some pretty dark places...think about Nazi race science (i know godwins law but for once it's actually relevant) it was based on the lie that the Aryan race existed and should be master of all and that jews and other undesirables were fit only for death or slavery...Pretty extreme to be sure, but all the same still based on what was essentially a scientific fraud...

When social policy is based on pseudo science be careful...Science is one of the most powerful things on earth when used properly because it is the best way we know of getting at the truth however when something puts on a mask and pretends to be science watch out...because few things are more dangerous as history has shown...

bottom line is that science should have no ideological component in it all, and likewise we should be very suspicious of people who drag science out to support their ideological postions...

time to ditch the idea that there is a 'balance of nature', no such thing exists, despite what environmentalists and ecologists might try to say. The concept of a 'balance of nature' is at best pseudo scientific and at worst pernicious nonsense. As far as we can see no such thing exists, time to stop making policy based on a fictional idea...

i don't see why mr. morgan should be deported (unless being an ass is an offense which one can be deported for) he has broken no laws as far as i can see...He has a first amendment right to say what he likes about the subject of gun control...No this is dumb...even if i think his views on guns are wrong ( i am some what pro 2nd amendment) he is entitled to his opinion and if CNN wants to pay to broadcast them that should be fine.
