The weekly Saturday Night Bump & Hussle hosted by AfterDARK features a wikkid mix of music inside the newly renovated Jupiter Room on St-Laurent. From funk and live reggae to 80's & 90's dance classics to house and garage anthems to break-beats and jungle/d&b, our rotating DJs cover the spectrum of urban dance music to bring you a hot party every week.

Another Monday signals the end of a wild weekend for everyone at AfterDARK. Our All Aboard event featuring ShyFX, Bonjay & Skratch Bastid was one of the most challenging events we have organized, and also one of the most successful.

Without detailing the hard work that went into making this event happen over the last 2 months, I would like to share the hard work that went into making this party happen in the last 48 hours before the event.

Station C seemed to be the perfect location for AfterDARK's latest project, and despite being told by EVERYONE in the Montreal entertainment industry that it was a mistake to work with that venue, we forged ahead, sometimes blindly, in the hopes that we would be the exception, and that All Aboard would be a success.

Thursday at 11am I receive a call saying that we will not be allowed to run past 3am on Friday night. This is a MASSIVE problem, as we have been selling an event that runs until 5am, and were relying on Station C to deliver that. Without the ability to run after-hours, Station C is just a bar, and is not the ideal venue that we believed it was. So with no après 3am location, we go into negotiations with Circus After-hours who help us develop a back-up plan that would give us the first floor of the club and allow the event to continue at the new venue until 10am.

Thursday 5pm I receive a second call amounting to the cancellation of All Aboard at Station C. With 30 hours before our doors are to open, a massive media and promotional blitz, over 10K invested in the event, we find ourselves homeless. We all went to bed on Thursday night without a venue for one of the largest urban dance events Montreal has had in a while.

At 2pm on Friday afternoon, 8 hours before our doors were to open, we ink a deal with The Darling Foundry and our already over worked machine goes into overdrive. The venue was bare when we arrived. No sound, no stage, no bar, no coat check, NO NOTHING. Just a massive, albeit beautiful, room which was full of technical challenges.

Well it was thanks to the hard work of the team, both it’s new old and new members that made this happen in the way that it did. Many of the people working on this project were new to the AfterDARK team and my hat goes off to them. Morgan Pampe, Pascalé, Caroline & Dave at The Foundry, Ricardo & JC at Circus were all instrumental in making the event happen and were a breath of fresh air after dealing with so much bull shit and dishonesty from the management at Station C. Having a team of such smart, hardworking and experienced people made all the difference in the world, and had it not been for Corey K on my right and Zach Klien on my left, this project would have fallen to shit.

That is not AfterDARK's style, and I believe that despite the imperfections and lack of finesse that we all like to deliver, this was one of the better events we have produced, and we ALL look forward to working together again to make bigger and better urban dance events. This project may not have been the financial success that it would and should have been, it was a success in so many ways and I know that as we begin to work on the next project, AfterDARK is in a stronger, more experienced and better position to deliver high quality dance events to the Montreal market.

Thank you to everyone who came out, put up with less then they usually get at an AfterDARK event, but still gave it there all. It was great to see EVERYONE flying so high. The energy in that room on Friday night was really awesome and something that we are all excited about replicating.

Stay tuned as we work towards our next mega event in late April.

ciao for now

We have ZERO documentation of All Aboard! Because we were so understaffed and busy on the night, there was no time to take any pictures or videos, let alone have a drink. If people have ANY good shots from the event please let me know at grahamhussler @ [ gmail.com ]
Our ability to show documentation to our sponsors will allow this company to grow and continue to produce high quality events - so help us out - please!

relax guys....I'm sure your event is going to be a smasher and that you will get your numbers. AfterDARK is a university promotion company that does events which cater towards the two english language schools in Montreal. I think that there is little overlap betweeen our clientele and both parties will be successful.
AND there was really no flexibility interms of the date. It was now or not at all.
SO, good luck, have fun and keep on doing what you do, cos it's dope!

Bio.............
UK bred Mat the Alien started playing records on his brother’s 1200’s at the age of 15.
His unique and innovative style was developed working at the family’s record store in Bury near Manchester. Surrounded by a selection of new and old vinyl, Mat’s style was fed by an eclectic blend of beats.
Notorious for his seamless cuts, effortless scratching ,and distinctive selection, Mat developed his skills by playing many clubs, one-off events and radio shows.

A move to Whistler, B.C., Canada found him inspired by his surroundings but lacking a nearby record store, so Mat concentrated on his DJ skills, making mix tapes and beats.

Mat pioneered a legendary 4-turntable night with Vancouver hip-hop pioneer Kilocee and the Incredible Ease named Spare Grooves for 4 years . He was also the host of Context, showcasing live, underground hip-hop from all over Canada and the US.

Mat has judged the DMC Championships for the past 5 years and played with the likes of- AfricaBambaata, del, The Herbaliser, Roots Manuva, Josh Martinez, Buck 65, Atmosphere, DJ Craze, Q Bert, A-Trak, Klever, Spitakular, Shortkut, Kid Koala, The Rascalz, Swollen Members, Moka Only, sweatshop union, Mr. Brady, DJ Dopey, Perfect Combination, Bad Company, Rahzel, Aceyalone, The Beatnuts, Killa Kela, Jeru the Damaja + many more.
As a producer, he has created solid beats, which have also been featured on soundtracks for Snowboard, SK8, Snowmobile, Mountain Bike and Horror Movies & tv shows.

Mat’s debut album, “downtime” features 16 self produced tracks on Really Good Records. AweDaCity, “Project MK Ultra”,will follow which features the lyrical masterminds Ty-C and Subliminal JC, ty-c and mat are producing the album which will be out 2005.

"A mix cd with A-Track, Abstract Rude, The herbaliser, Decoder, Dylan & Lox, and HighContrast – the first thing that comes to mind is, “How on earth is he going to pull this off?” But one awe-inspiring listen is all it takes to convince even the skeptics that Mat the Alien is on to some next level shit. kickass party, was awesome to see everyone.. some people i havent seen in way too long

i think the music rocked, and the whole emcee dissing thing not really justified.. sure sometimes towards the end it seemed a bit much and could use a bit of a break, but mostly it was tight rhymes, good flow, and the crowd was hyped. if u were sitting upstairs chilling u were probably annoyed cuz u wanna hear the music more.. but think of the people going crazy on the floor! i mean, this IS the bigger part of the party.

props to djs and emcees that threw down, the vibe was fucking wikkid.

big up idj bros!

BEST FUKKIN PARTY OF THE YEAR!

Thanks a lot IDJ for one of the nicest events in a long time. You guys work hard day-in, day-out to bring Montreal a party that is always a guaranteed good time.

Saturday's party definitely took the cake as the best vibed, highest energy IDJ in a while. Everyone involved did a great job at hyping up the party and keeping the people moving. And when I left at 8am, the place was still packed...people still brucking out.

The complaints about this party are from 2 or 3 people, namely one of the djs and his girl. ALL the ravers who were there on Saturday night with their party hats on had a good time and will be back at future IDJ events for sure for sure. And that is whom we need inside the party, people who want to get down and have fun.

The people who are up in arms about the night need to remember that this was only a party ... a wikkid party, but just a party, and not worth getting to upset about. The vast majority of people in attendance had a blast, enjoyed the music and the mcing and will no doubt return.... That makes this party a huge success and proof of a job well done by all involved.

I said it before, and I'll say it again....IDJ is Montreal's best jungle/drum and bass event. Bar none.

Big up to the IDJ crew, Seb, Nitrous, Benji, the PI 67 (FUKKIN TEARING SET ON SATURDAY ... OH MY GAWD), the Host One and Montréal’s great Latin hype the MC Loco.... also to my man Regimental (the party specialist) and all of the out of town performers who brought the vibes, the energy and the smiles on Saturday night.

I hope the next IDJ is as much fun as this one!
