If you one day find yourself longing to see a romantic winter sea, Anmyeon-do, or Anmyeon Island, in Taean-gun, South Chungcheong Province is the place to be. Anmyeondo is easily accessible by car because it is connected to the mainland by both Anmyeon Great Bridge and old Yeonyuk Bridge. Let’s take a trip to Anmyeondo, where memories from the last summer are still hiding in sand dunes.

The trip to Anmyeondo starts from Hongseong Interchange on Seohaean Expressway. While driving along the seawalls of Seosan A and B districts, you will see flocks of migratory birds skimming the waters of Ganweol Lake and Bunam Lake. The serene view of migratory birds on Cheonsu Bay makes the trip to Anmyeondo twice as pleasant.

In the past, there was a large arch reading “Welcome to Anmyeondo Island” on the way to the island from the end of Taean Peninsula, but it has been removed recently. But even now the entrance to the island seems to be welcoming visitors with joy.

Anmyeondo is quite a large island, stretching over 232.5 km long from the north to the south. But it was not an island originally; it used to be a cape dangling on the surf-pounded southwestern end of Taean Peninsula, but was transformed to an artificial island when land was dug out to build a canal that opened a waterway toward Cheonsu Bay. Designed by Kim Yu, Anmyeondo’s governor during the reign of King Injo of the Joseon Dynasty, the canal was built by severing Nam-myeon, the narrowest part of the Taean Peninsula, and Changgi-ri, eventually forming Anmyeondo. In 1968, Yeonyuk Bridge was built to connect Anmyeondo with the mainland. The Taean Coastal National Park, where Anmyeondo is located, sits at the center of Taean Peninsula and the neighboring coasts of the island. The coast of Anmyeondo, which makes up 50 percent of the park, is a popular beach during the summer vacation season, but it has beautiful scenery all year round.

Spectacular winter sea

The moment you enter Anmyeondo, a beach port comes into sight. Barges lying languorously at low tide and an old ship that must have seen its heyday long ago add to the peculiar charm of the sea landscape. This port is known as a trading center for Yellow Sea prawns and blue crabs.

While passing a village from the port, you will see the famous White Sand beach, which is mostly crowded with tourists in summer. There is a wide and long sandbank on the beach. At low tide, you can even drive a car here as the sand of the beach becomes very hard. If you seize that opportunity, make sure to open up all the windows in your car to chase away your worries and stress caused by the routine of life.

On the southern end of the beach you will see a stone mountain rising high into the sky. If you take a look at the mountain from the south, you will see three peaks named “Sambong” (meaning “three peaks” in Korean). Sambong Beach, which spreads around the southern coast, is famous for its soft sand.

After visiting the beaches, drop by Anmyeon-eup where dense pine-tree forests grab tourists’ attention. Trees on Anmyeondo used to be thick and lush to the extent of prompting a saying, “You can become rich with an axe.” But now only few trees are left due to reckless deforestation since the time of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. By looking at the vast Songim Forest it is easy to guess how dense these forests used to be.

Anmyeon-eup, the center of Anmyeondo, can be bustling at times, but generally it is as serene as any other small town. Pass the cross-country bus terminal, turn right and keep driving until you see an asphalted highway and a signboard with directions to Bangpo and Kkotji beaches. Bangpo Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Anmyeondo along with White Sand Beach. But in winter all you can hear here is the desolate sounds of waves breaking on the shore.

After dropping by Bangpo Beach, visit Bangpo Port and the Golden Rain Tree Forest. The 500 golden rain trees clustered on Bangpo coast were designated as Natural Monument No. 138. The golden rain tree originates from Shantung, China. Presumably, golden rain trees first appeared in Korea when their seeds were brought to Anmyeondo from China by the sea. This tall tree with brown leaves blossoms in June, and in September it bears cherry-shaped fruits that are used to make Buddhist rosaries.

There is a scenic hiking path leading from Anmyeon-eup to Yeongmok on the southern end of Anmyeondo. A hike up and down the hills meandering through pine-tree forests and verdant green grassland spread out on a spacious ranch will conclude your trip to Anmyeondo. At the end of your trip don’t forget to enjoy a spectacular sunset in the glowing sky on the western coast of Anmyeondo. Kkotji Beach is the most popular spot for viewing romantic sunsets. The beach has a spacious parking lot, and its “Grandpa and Grandma Rocks” standing on the seashore create a beautiful landscape and is a perfect place to take pictures. During this time of the year, you can easily see the sun sliding down the Grandpa and Grandma Rocks from Kkot Bridge, which connects Bangpo Port with the Kkotji parking lot. Amyeondo Island, a treasure trove of tourist sites, is an ideal place to visit in winter.
