Providing the musical component of the evening:
Jay Haze (Germany)
Final Scratch DJ Set
The story of Jay Haze's life thus far is so improbable that one would be hard pressed to invent a more twisted narrative. Growing up in a small Irish mining town in rural Pennsylvania, little Jay spent his afternoons playing in the heavily contaminated industrial yards of a chemical waste "super fund site". Shunning the two local career option of suicide or drug addiction, Jay left to wander the U.S. during the 90s, bouncing from coast to coast without a permanent home. If one year saw Jay down and out as a temporary inhabitant of San Francisco's Golden Gate park, soon after he would find himself living the good life on the East Coast, making bank as a world-renowned glassblower. While DJing throughout these years, influenced by early New York and Detroit sounds of Frankie Bones, Adam X, and, most of all, Richie Hawtin, it was not until Jay ended up in Philadelphia in 1998 that he decided to completely channel all of his artistic energies into electronic music.

Teaming up with techno heads Bjoern Hartmann and Sean O'Neal, Jay founded the quirky tech-house imprint Tuning Spork records in 1999 and subsequently built a local minimal following from scratch with a series of legendary loft parties and residencies at Philadelphia institutions like Fluid and Silk City. With artistic inspiration accelerating in all directions, Jay soon afterwards launched the vinyl labels Contexterrior and Future Dub, representing different sides of his multiple musical personalities, respectively.

Tuning Spork is primarily geared to bring glitch and deepness to the dancefloor -- tracks that make you shake your booty while dousing your head in minimal crackles, scrapes, scrunches, warm tones and rolling basslines that are brilliantly tripped-out, soothingly warm and tastefully funky. Future Dub offers a Jamaican reggae-influenced side of heady and experimental techno-dub -- where he releases under the names Dub Surgeon, Dub Cord and Montage Spiral. Contexterrior finally is dedicated to bringing you ultra-minimal, glitch-heavy, laid-back experimental tracks -- where the listener becomes "sucked in" and impelled to groove 'n' sway to the clean, glitchy, warmly quirky, densely minimal, faintly dubby, head-trippin' chuggers with peculiar funky basslines and soft, delicate synth-pads that stroke your head gracefully amid the cacophonic brain-poking charmingly sculpted out of found-sounds. This is where Haze enjoys luring you into a powerful mental journey through his most dynamic production techniques. Haze's minimal tech-house and experimental tracks are always profoundly deep, minimal, glitch-y, abstract and vibrantly psychedelic -- using elements of 4/4 rhythms, dub, his own found-sounds, and any other traditionally "unwanted" noise like static, hiss and pops. The final outcome is an intense head-trip appropriate for both the dancefloor and home-listening.

In 2003, Haze moved to Europe to bring his trademark sound out of the U.S underground and into the global spotlight. Working at first out of Amsterdam in various studios in an anarchist's squat and an underground bicycle garage, he soon afterwards set up shop in Berlin, from where you can expect another wave of mind-boggling tracks in the near future. While always focused on developing the sound of the three in-house labels, Jay Haze is also increasingly releasing tracks and remixes on a few hand-picked external outlets (see discography). Looking beyond the world of vinyl publishing, Haze also started the netlabel [ textone.org ] together with Bjoern Hartmann, which releases free high-quality mp3s online under a Creative Commons license. Through his uncompromising A&R work, Textone was the first online label to introduce talented vinyl artists such as Hakan Lidbo, Rene Breitbarth, Mikael Stavostrand and Lars Fenin to the online scene.

As a DJ, Jay Haze pushes a dancefloor-centered sound that rocks while always staying sophisticated. He has been touring extensively with his three turntable, final scratch sets that often span a decade of musical development and pose early Detroit techno stompers next to the latest experimental diddy. Engagements have already brought him all over the U.S.; most of Europe -east and west- including gigs in Germany, France, Switzerland, the UK, Poland, Czech, Slovakia and Spain; as well as Japan. Over the years, Jay has played alongside many influential minimal artists like Richie Hawtin, Daniel Bell, Jeff Milligan, Zip, Steve Bug and Adam Marshall, amongst others.

For the future, Haze plans on bringing his brilliantly intoxicating live performance to as many countries as possible -- meanwhile, he will continue pumping out several tracks a week -- each being it's own unique brand of electronic minimalism that may change your life forever.

Pheek (1 hour Live PA)
Contexterrior Record Release! Brand new Pheek LP on Jay Haze's Label Contexterrior.

Drawn by the possibilities found in live performance, Jean-Patrice dedicates himself to it. Up to then, he had been an occasional fixture at various raves since 1992, but in 1998 he found his direction after a set by Richie Hawtin at the Medialounge. The Pheek project was born soon after, with the purchase of machines which helped fuel his passion for sound. Initially working with Mateo Murphy, the two friends played regularly at various events in Montreal, including the Medialounge, Electra, Club Unity, Mutek, as well as quite a few raves. They were also responsible for the first release on the Hautec label. Afterwards came an important turning point, his meeting with Éloi Brunelle, This alliance would prove to be very beneficial for Pheek, who would later release his album “Paysages Matriciels”.

Mateo Murphy (DJ Set)

Mateo found his calling at the age of 14, when, looking for an album by a favourite artist, he stumbled onto the 12" section of his local record store. Intrigued by the concept of the remix, he started buying 12"s by his favourite pop artists, gradually moving towards the more underground house sounds coming out of Detroit and Chicago.

Once in college, however, he discovered Montreal's fledgling rave scene, and the harder European sounds that drove it: dropping out of school shortly after, he devoted himself to deejaying full time. After just a few months of intense practice, he got his professional rave debut in 1994, and quickly grew a strong following in Montreal and the surrounding area. Combining the funky rhythms and soul of house music with the hypnotic repetition and intensity of techno, he developed a unique sound that manages to appeal to fans of both. His skill at working a crowd, combined with his impeccable programming and seamlessly mixing, makes his sets irresistible to dance to and has made him one of the most respected DJs in the city. He has held residencies at 5 different clubs in the city (which earned him a top 5 spot in the 'best club dj category' in a recent Montreal Mirror reader's poll), and has made countless guest appearances headlining in bars and raves across the country.

Pushed by the desire to broaden his horizons, he decided that producing his own music was the next step. Fuelled by the local success of his early productions, he decided in 1998 to invest himself fully as a recording artist, cutting down on his hectic deejaying schedule to build up his own studio and produce seriously, developing his sound. The fruits of this labour are quickly coming to light: in a short time, he has released records on all the prominent montreal-based techno record labels, which has lead to an A & R position at Default recordings, and long-term record deals with several others, including Disktrick and Turbo recordings. His releases consistently find themselves in the charts of some of the biggest DJs in the world, including Carl Cox, DJ Dan, Josh Wink, and Adam Beyer. And with the increasing demand for his production skills from outside of the city and his growing reputation as both a live act and a DJ, the next year promises to make him one of Montreal's biggest exports.
