you're right, i should stop whinning, and the metro's should slump into a shithole and become my NYC's subway system, that's totally the way to go. |

Ian, i'm not sure if you have ever been to NY. But don't ever try attempting to compare MTL's metro to NYs'.
I once got off at some station in Chinatown(NYC), and I had to hold my breath until I got onto the street becuase the air was so stale and hot inside the station. I nearly vomited. VOMITED! I dont think you can say that about any stations in MTL. With the exception of Guy... |

pointing out the problem is the job of those who cant find solutions :)
those who have solutions or wish to find one arent bitching like lil whores but rather finding new ways to help or change what seems so wrong to them! :) bitchin is the first sign of frustration and frustration is the product of self-hatered ! sometimes we may feel like were not good enough but expressing anger on msg board isnt going to help it ... dont say something , do it ! |

And despite all the crapy DEST, ET scratchies... There have been some really nice ones. ie: Demser |

complaining about defacing public property isn't bitching, cause quite honnestly the vast majority of the poppulation does not like that shit.
and i have been in NYC's subways.. they're in horrible shape, tagging doesn't help either. |

Step A - Vandals vandalize Step B - Citizens whine Step C - Vandalism gets buffed Step D - Go to Step A Vandals won't stop vandalizing. Citizens won't stop whining. The won't stop cleaning up graffiti. And it'll keep on like this forever. You have the following choices: 1. Become indifferent and stop whining. 2. Start an anti-graffiti crusade and do something about it. 3. Keep whining and get nothing done. I predict you'll choose option 3. And in my personal opinion, if you're not going to do something about a problem, you have no right to whine and bitch about it. |

A vast majority of the population dont even pay attention to it... Unless it intrudes on their day-to-day life(like a huge tag across their front door or on their car).
Like the person said earlier, Montreal Metro stations really (really) are works of art (with exceptions to those ghetto ass stations). I don't believe that some throw ups or tags are gonna take the beauty away from them. And i definitly don't believe bombing is gonna reduce or stations to the likes of NYCs'. I find grafitti adds to the citys culture. |

I find grafitti adds to the citys culture. Like you said, the metro stations are works of art. Take Snowdon for example. There are four platforms. Each platform has a gigantic mural painted along the tracks for each season. Vandals have tagged all over the gigantic murals, effectively ruining them. Now don't get me wrong, I'm into graffiti, but there are some things that shouldn't be vandalized. |

The problem is that, as much as you and a few people see graffiti and tagging as art, as a whole, society does NOT, they see it as ugly and unapealing, and that society is the MAJORITY of the people. Frankly, most of the crap that's on the metro, INCLUDING the big-ass, full color, embosed, took-6-hours-to-do murals are fucking ugly as shit and don't belong in the metro. And this is coming from someone who loves graf as an art form.
Ever think that maybe it's not people whining about "art" that's the problem, but STUPID PEOPLE who have no idea where is or isn't an appropriate place to put said art? The mona lisa was painted onto canvas, not the side of a horse-drawn buggy, because the artist wanted it to be appreciated. Graf should remain on brick walls that are designated specifically for the purpose. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fucking stupid. Untill they smarten up and REALISE that the rest of the population doesn't give two shits about graf and find it to be ugly, then the price of bus-passes is going to do nothing but INCREASE because they have to clean more of that shit up. No matter how much YOU may like it and find it to be beautifull, you can't FORCE people to like it by bombarding them with it. |

One of the rules being no defacing private property(homes+Cars)or Places of religous value(churches+Tombstones)... As for Snowdon metro... I find that the original murals -the ones that look like old enchanted forests from hell- should be primed. Then have all-star writters to productions all along the wall. I find that this would prevent 'taggers' from defacing the wall, simply out of respect for the pieces. Not to mention that these pieces would be dope as fuck adding a little pinash to the station itself. If the city were to legalize more walls, it would prevent all the so-called icky grafitti that everyone hates (tags+throws)simply because of another guideline that writters follow: Throws over Tags, Pieces over throws, no Tags over thows or pieces. Plus it would allow writters to expose their work in open areas that everyone could see. Not only that but the citys population would be a little more liberal to the idea grafitti is here to stay and should be accepted as a legitimate form of art, that is expressed on the sides of buildings and rooftops. [ www.bombingscience.com ] Im not sure exactly where this is, all I know is that not one tag or thorwup is goin on that wall. And that thiswall is undoubtably dope. |

Is it really true that the reason prices for passes and tickets are going up due to grafitti?
I always assumed that these prices were hiked due to greed. But I guess if I assume, I just make and ass of you and me. |

I find that this would prevent 'taggers' from defacing the wall, simply out of respect for the pieces. I'd have to disagree with that. If writers are trying to get themselves respected as artists, they should respect other artforms/artists as well. An artist tooks days and weeks to paint those murals. Out of respect, vandals should not be going over them, no matter how scary or ugly the mural may be. I don't know about you, but if I spent weeks painting a mural and some little punk went over it with a crappy tag or throw, I'd wanna bash his skull in. And Screwhead, who was your post directed at? |
Good [+1]Toggle ReplyLink» Screwhead replied on Wed Mar 24, 2004 @ 3:14pm |
It was directed at anyone who thinks that metros are an "apropriate" place to put their "art". |
