Try not smoking weed for a week or two then smoke a joint... Then you will realize how much it can mess you up..

I don't have anything against weed but I've experienced what anyone would consider a "bad trip" from smoking it... Especially if I am somewhere I don't want to be.. Obviously it's all temporary but you can't say that weed doesn't make some people paranoid

It has been proven that thc is somewhat of a mood enhancer. If you're paranoid to begin with it might make things worse... same applies if you're in a bad mood, discouraged, stressed, sad, or angry. It may relax you physically but cause you to dwell on certain things that are upsetting you.

Generally speaking, I believe this is a common mental-block / side effect for people who smoke but can't remain composed after doing so. I've gone smoke free many times for periods of several weeks and eventhough It may have allowed my tolerance to go down slightly, I still never got buzzed to the point where I couldn't function or go about my scheduled routine. Whether I smoke during the work day or whatnot, I take all of my business & personal responsabilities very seriously.

Those who know me well know how serious I can be about certain things. I do my best not to allow a silly habit like smoking affect my general productivity although I've seen many people go downhill from drug use but never will you hear weed as the sole contributing factor to a person's social downfall.

Paranoia is a side effect just like paranoia can be a side effect of other drugs like amphetamines (probably to a much higher degree)... I doubt that everyone who has gotten paranoid from weed at one time or another is naturally like that because it is such a common side-effect. It's never really serious though, you'd probably see much more serious paranoia with amphetamine abusers or maybe with some hallucinogens...

I agree with one point though, I don't think smoking weed (or doing any drug, generally) is a good way to relieve a bad mental state, if anything, it will make things worse...

I see where you are going with this, but I don't totally agree. Marijuana, like all drugs, has side effects that may not neccesarily manifest themselves in all users, but affect some more than others. Paranoia is defintely one of the side effects of marijuana, but one that affects a minority of users: most people don't get paranoid ever, some get paranoid after repeated use, and a few people get paranoid no matter how little or infrequently they smoke. Every person reacts differently to a given substance, but enough people have reported paranoia on marijuana that its probably not a case of "they were all paranoid to being with". Personally, I've never got paranoid on weed, but know of several people who have.

I wouldn't suggest that marijuana neccesarily makes most people less productive overall, but I think the case can be made that at least while under the primary influence of weed (say, up till 2 hours after smoking) it becomes more difficult to perform mentally challenging work. Of course thats not neccesarily a bad thing, as long as theres no need to do any work in that time. When I choose to smoke, I know that theres no point in trying to work for the next 2-3 hours at least, so I only will smoke if I have no need to do any work in that timeframe - which isn't really any different than deciding to see a movie or do something else for fun in that timeframe.

Perhaps the paranoia you speak of is nothing more than the paranoia of being judged... I know many people who are become paranoid when smoking in public. This is usually attributed to the fear of being judged by fellow bystanders & pedestrians or the fear of coming in contact with law inforcement individuals. I firmly believe that a great majority of paranoid smokers will ease up once weed is legalized and more accepted within our society.

I'm assuming that playing chess would be classified as "mentally challenging". Ironically I find smoking will if anything, improve my game.
I'd be interested if you could articulate an explanation for this exception.

Marijuana apparently helps some people in non-linear or abstract thinking, so thats probably why you might be able to play chess better stoned. Personally, I have never experienced enhanced thoughts on weed, which is why I consider it a pretty useless drug (at least for me).

But try any kind of work that requires more focused thinking, like reading an essay, solving math problems, or (as scotty p mentioned) doing technical music work, and you'll defintely notice a fairly substantial amount of impairment.
