*Just to clarify the issue, there is a board that decides what can and can't be played on the air, what time of day it can be played etc.
The are, incidentaly, the same people who decide how much local talent is played on our stations.* And yes, Sarah, there is art that is as sexually explicit as the lyrics to these songs. The difference is, these paintings, like these songs, arn't very good and are not teaching us anything. I am not a fan of Brittany Spears or the Backstreet Boys but at least they can somewhat tactfully present us with sex in their songs and videos, and do for the most part associate it with love. The problem with this song isn't it's overly explicit lyrics. The problem is the message it's sending to young men and women: that sex is not an act of love but rather a somehwhat raw and almost violent one ("then suck it off til I shake and cum nigga make sure I keep bustin nuts nigga all over your face and suff"). Whether or not youth decide that that sex is trully like that is a decision that has to be made earlier on in life. Untill then sex has to be portrayed to them (and yes they should be facing it at 14, and frankly earlier) as an act of love with someone you love, however corny and cliche that may sound. The fact of the matter is, this song doesn't promote a positive image about sex and thats why it isn't suitable for younger kids. Without teaching youth about sex in a positive way you'll have little girls running around feeling cheated, in abusive relationships and little boys feeling confused about love itself. and that, is my 2 cents. |

getting them used to the idea? they're already used to the idea. and they already heard a thousand times in their lives that sex should be about love. they aren't stupid enough to think that this song means go fuck everyone and let your boyfriends beat you up. they are old enough to decide what they want, whether they wanna have sex and what it would be about to them. besides, at 14 i don't think sex is about love to anyone, no matter how many times they hear a song telling them so they won't really know until they experience meaningless relationships for the first time. normally people have to experience sex and relationships a bit before deciding that they're gonna look for love or even care about it, before that they don't really know what it is or why people want it, and nobody can explain it to them and expect them to understand |

"at 14 i don't think sex is about love to anyone" my point exactly.
amber, that was extrememly well said. "The problem is the message it's sending to young men and women: that sex is not an act of love but rather a somewhat raw and almost violent one" and i think that's probably why it bothered me so much; and it's true, i mean, i used to listen to alot of rap and hip-hop and hardcore, which all use bad words, but the swearing never bothered me, so yes it is the context of the words that make this song so harsh. and i have to agree with your statement about the backstreet boys, and add that nick is hot. and yes pat, maybe you learn alot from extremely graphic art, but that doensn't make it okay for children even if they are "learning from it." i don't see why young kids would have to "learn" such things, they're so young they should be out learning more important things. |
