I have a pretty old WD My Book external HDD and it's getting so that it's more and more unreliable everyday; it randomly stops reading files or can't find them anymore and whatnot, until I reboot and things are back to normal. Seeing as how I don't want to lose both my shit and the hundreds of gigs of files I have on it one day, I'm looking into buying a new external HDD but...
I was once nominated top IT on ravewave, and sadly, them glory days are far behind now (who'd a thunk it), and I was wondering what you top-notch cats full of swagger and geek knowledge had to recommend, that wouldn't fail me so bad as this stupid My Book.

Get a LACIE. Very reliable and they have metal casings

I always buy Seagate Barracudas, top quality and decent prices on [ tigerdirect.ca ] (home delivery) or [ sigmawave.com ] (du Parc / Milton).
LACIEs are also good, especially for travel. If you want to move your HDD a lot, you want solid state and 2.5" (smaller); then go for LACIE. Otherwise, buy a standard-sized HDD (3.5") because it's faster and cheaper; then go for Seagate. Avoid the ones with "automatic backups" or extra software bullcrap, it's never really useful and it messes up with data eventually.

It's most likely going to keep on sitting on my desk, LACIE seems expensive, at least what I saw on their website is kind of out there, I just need extra space to store my files but not have to worry about them suddenly being corrupt or missing and whatnot.

I'd suggest an enclosure and whatever HDD is on sale.
Has the double advantage of enabling you to switch HDDs super easily, put a new one it, blahblahblah. I bought a Vantec one aeons ago (quite literally), carried it all over, dropped countless times (not from super high heights but still..) and the ONLY thing that managed to fuck on it was the blue LED, which now flickers instead of being on all the time. ......... and this is the part where someone explains to me what an enclosure is, 'cause logically, I'm thinking "casing" and it's... most likely not necessarily that.

I dont understand how ppl can drop them over and shit, i mean you do use an USB key when you go to a friend's house or something like and wanna bring your files over and leave the HDD at your home safely on your desk plugged into the 'puter.
I mean I havent moved it at all since I buyed it, I just plugged the freakin thing and start downloading and transfering stuff on it and the very cool part about it is that it came already formated ^^ I never dropped it once, never leaved my app. once, working fine, and the price 100$ each. so 200$ for 4TB.

Dee, it is EXACTLY that. The cheapest Vantec enclosure will turn pretty much any 3.5in SATA HDD into a plug-and-play USB2.0 external HD. You can also pay a bit more for a combo USB/Firewire, there's even some network enabled ones.
Kuzu, well that's what YOU need 'em for. Some of us appreciate being able to move large files, even IF USB keys are getting larger and larger. ... Now, I stand by my suggestion. The only downside IS, HDDs ARE more expensive these days. Something in Thailand or Taiwan or something

It's not the dropping I have a problem with, my hd stays on my desk almost permanently, there have been several issues with different people unplugging my WD hdd in very unorthodox manners which caused major shitstorms in regards to files being lost and corrupted and the drive itself acting retarded to the point of having to format a couple of times. T_T Update » DrGonzo wrote on Wed Feb 8, 2012 @ 4:11pm Oops, didn't see your post, jo..
I'm kind of confused, what exactly would be the difference between a regular external HDD (ie. my WD My Book) and having to use an enclosure to turn a regular hdd into an external one? Update » DrGonzo wrote on Wed Feb 8, 2012 @ 4:17pm It's like I'm taking stupid pills, I feel bad about asking any kind of question right now hahahah.

just get whatevers on sale at bestbuy/futureshop, it doesnt matter if u get the hottest most expensive cool hdd today because next month there will be a newer and better one and 3 months after that people will ask whats that outdated piece of hardware on your desk... :P |

I don't care about having the hottest newest thing, seriously, until this summer, I was still using my old 40GB computer that had like.. not even 500mb ram or whatever in it. Hence why I needed an external HD, which I bought, I don't know, years ago. It was great at first and eventually came the "holy shit this is slow" and now the "goddamn it, it won't read anything again" every couple of days. Update » DrGonzo wrote on Wed Feb 8, 2012 @ 4:22pm Granted, it's probably just being old but... I feel like it's just a matter of time before it dies on me.

Weeeeell, there you go, ravedave helps me make a point:
With an enclosure, you can just buy a new internal HDD if you ever fill up the one you put in it. You can use it to salvage your PC's HDD and transfer files elsewhere if your PC ever fucks up (obviously, not if the HDD itself fails, but I hope you get my point). It has NEVER failed on me, and I've had it for close to 10 years now, IIRC. I was actually surprised they look exactly the same as the one I have. I mean, this way, YOU get to choose what HD you put in it. I've plugged and unplugged my enclosure in many different PCs and in very unorthodox ways, NEVER failed on me. Metal case. Solid. And you can actually very easily remove it IF something goes wrong. Easier to troubleshoot the HD IF something goes wrong. IF. Anyway. Somekid has one too, he's also very enthusiastic about it. Definitely one of the best purchases I ever made.

Oooooh, okay, makes sense! So... the HDD itself, doesn't quite matter which one I choose and I should instead be checking the "features" of the enclosure itself (ie. speed, etc.)? And here opens another can of technical mumbo-jumbo worms! Heh..

Good [+1]Toggle ReplyLink» Masa replied on Wed Feb 8, 2012 @ 5:18pm |
Well speed will be limited by the USB ports of your computer, mostly (since it looks like an old piece of crap, no offense )... So no, it's not a huge can of worms.
I just had a longer look, and well, an enclosure that does USB 3.0 / 2.0 / 1.0 and supports up to 2TB HDDs is 46$. [ sigmawave.com ] You ACTUALLY should make sure you buy a decent HDD. Either one you'd eventually move to a desktop computer, or y'know, something from a solid brand. It's super easy to install a HDD in one of those, takes about 5 minutes if you're lousy with computers. And again, I've dropped mine countless times (sometimes even from desk height), stuffed it loose in a backpack, plugged it in some weird ass-computers (do be careful with viruses), had it tip over cuz I can't be arsed to use that little stand thingy it comes from... NEVER failed on me.

Hahah yeah no I have another computer that's decent now, ce n'est pas le dernier cri, but like... eons away from the one I had for the last 10 years. I don't understand this: USB 3.0 / 2.0 / 1.0
