I have a habit of wandering sketchy areas alone at night for kicks, but I've been lucky to have only been involved in one violent incident in Montreal. It was at night, on the metro at McGill Station. Me and a friend were just getting off the bus when a gang of teenage thugs stole my brother's hat and tried to take his cell phone - I had just enough time to jump in the car before the door closed, and was immediately maced right in the face by one of the punks. Fuck that hurt so much. Luckily I closed one eye in time so I could still see, and I kinda just lost it, and started beating on the kid who maced me. I got punched in the face at least once and someone eventually knocked me over, but all this was pretty much a blur. Finally the thugs scattered to the next car (the metro had stopped and I'm sure a few people had phoned the cops by this point), so I went to go see them to get my brother's hat back. There were like seven of them, they invited me to go back to wherever their destination was, well fuck that - we were way outnumbered, plus cops had been called and I had way too much contraband on me. Luckily, they had ditched the hat in the previous car and my brother found it. It all ended well, but damn - getting maced is not a fun experience.

One of my buddies got maced by a fat black chick, near guy on st catherines, for defending a homeless guy.

He was in a lot of pain for hours after.

def doesn't look like a fun experience.

the moral of the story is if you get maced, make sure you grab the attacker/sprayer so you punch his face until he get cut then wash your eyes with his blood.

yea. I think my natural reaction would be to cover my face, or step back etc, opposed to being on the offensive side tho. that shit is strong!

lol. pretty dangerous habit =) it can be fun, but sometimes it's not a good idea to tempt fate like that. From the time I lived there I thought MTL isn't too bad. I've never had any problems in the downtown area. downtown Hamilton is much sketchier

One cold winter night at 4 AM, this really big sketchy dude followed me from the Dunkin Donuts on Beaubien & St. Denis. At first I noticed him clocking me from outside while I was sitting in the store eating my bagel. dude just stood out there in the bitter cold pretending not to watch me. and then when I came out he waited while I lit a smoke, and then started following me. every time I crossed a street he would too. he was definitely stalking me - probably just waiting for a nice shadowy area to try and mug me. but when he started closing in just a few feet away, I made it very clear I was ready for combat, and he turned around and walked back the way he came.

but overall I found it pretty safe in the areas I was in. I'm actually really surprised the police let all the craziness happen at that McDonalds. I always picture Toronto being grimier than MTL - but I've never heard of street gangs taking over a McDs in Toronto.

I used to live one street corner away from Beaubien & St-Denis and it's by far the least dangerous neighborhood I've lived in. That seemed to be some sort of exception although at 4am, anything's possible pretty much anywhere. :)

oh ya for sure - that neighbourhood is fine. not dangerous at all. he was just some random dude who looked like he'd just got of prison or the psycho ward.

when I lived in the mcgill ghetto, we were up drinking all night this one time, and my friends went to the 25hr dep on parc, to pick up some more liquids around 8am.

on their way back, they passed two thuggish looking characters, who asked them if they wanted any weed, or something along those lines, and then grabbed one of the girls with a big kitchen knife to her throat, telling them to hand over all their cash.

they gave the guys 30$ and walked back to my place...

just sayin', crazy fuckers can be anywhere, at any time of the day/night.

I've learned that...

to never underestimate anyone, absolutely anyone. IT doesn't matter what he/she looks like. What they do, or who they know. Doesn't matter if they look vulnerable. IT doesn't matter if you carrying heat. Doesn't matter if you have a PHD, or know martial arts. It doesn't matter if you have back up gang. One shit goes wrong.. and it could end just like that.

just Walk Away. Defend yourself for sure. but instigating violence is just... taking chances.

Walking away is always the best solution, the main thing is too never show fear & never let yourself get surrounded. Tonight I had a group six 18 year thugs size me up and follow me while I was walking down St Catherine. I kept watching them out of the corner of my eye and picked up a nice big rock. Then I kept on switching sidewalks to see what they would do. Confused the living shit out of those assholes hehehe...

Incidentally there was another violent mugging this week, right down the street from that Mcdonalds, pretty sure it was the same guys I saw the friday before, they were driving a dark coloured car as well. Guy nearly died...Scary stuff...

I tried giving it to a cop on friday, you know what he did, he tried writing it on his hand, then his pen ran out of ink, so he CALLED FOR A BACKUP PEN.

I wish I'd filmed that, fucking hilarious

yup. if anybody tries to instigate at a bar or on the street, I would just try and ignore em and walk away from it. it's not worth it. I have a life and I know myself. I don't have anything to prove. but if I'm cornered or feel like I have to defend myself, that's a different story.

I remember back in 2003 - I was coming home from a gig in Toronto at around 3 AM. I was on Dufferin street - which was pretty cracked out and sketchy late at night - waiting for one of those all-night blueline buses. I had my big flight case with all kinds of really valuable records on a trolley.

So I see this gangsta walking up the other side of this deserted street checking me and my flight case out giving me a really hard stare. A couple minutes later he comes back down the street, crosses at the lights, and came walking back up my side right towards me, giving me this thousand-yard stare. intimidating looking guy. razor-shaved head, wearing a wife beater, muscular and just looked like a really grimey dude. but then I just got mad.. I'm thinking.. here I am taking the late night bus back from a gig to save 20 bucks on taxi fare.. and this scumbag thinks he's gonna jack me? *fuck that*

so I just spat on the ground. took off my leather jacket and hung it on the trolley handle, and got ready for war. I was all pumped full of adrenaline, rolling my shoulders, and bouncing on the balls of my feet. I don't know what he had planned when he first approached, but he seemed to think better of it and just walked on by without saying a word. In situations like that I protect my records like a mother bear and her cubs.

I've always thought that it would be a great idea to have a paintball gun filled with a mix of two different paintballs - half filled with the ultra-staining permanent dye that banks use in the fake bills, and the other half with a Capsicum powder or liquid.. go after these motherfuckers.. blind them and mark them so that they can't go anywhere without people knowing what they've done..
