Using a word that describes a group of people in a derogatory way, even if it is not used to describe someone who actually belongs to that group, creates a negative association with that word and other things that are associated with that word. It also influences young people to have a negative association with anyone who is connected to it. Regardless of if you're using it in "that way" or not.
