Super hacker makes ATMs spit cash

LAS VEGAS - A security expert showed off techniques for breaking into ATMs, causing machines to spit out cash to a cheering crowd at an annual gathering of hackers.

“I hope to change the way people look at devices that from the outside are seemingly impenetrable,” Barnaby Jack, director of research at security consulting firm IOActive Labs, told a standing-room-only crowd before launching the demonstration using equipment he purchased over the Internet.

He spent over a year learning to break into stand-alone automated teller machines found at gas stations, bars and retail establishments.

At the annual Black Hat conference he showed how he could upload his home-brewed piece of software dubbed Dillinger — named after the infamous bank robber — to an ATM made by privately held Tranax Technologies. After he infected the ATM, he approached the machine and instructed it to start dispensing cash.

Jack used a key available over the Internet to open the case of an ATM then inserted a USB thumb drive that forced the machine to spit out its entire jackpot.

The ATMs he tested run on Windows CE, a version of Microsoft Corp’s ubiquitous operating system widely used in specialized computers, such as ATMs.

He said both the ATM makers have issued software that would prevent hackers from repeating the same attacks he performed onstage, but he added that ATMs from all manufacturers are still vulnerable to attack.

“I’m not naive enough enough to think I’m the only person who can do it,” he said.

He also said he believed that the ATMs used by financial institutions were also vulnerable, but that he had not simulated any attacks because he had not been able to get hold of any bank ATMs.

Bob Douglas, vice president of engineering for Triton, said he was not aware of any successful attacks on his company’s equipment.

Officials with Tranax could not be reached for comment.

Some 6,000 hackers and security professionals are attending this week’s Black Hat conference where they are discussing vulnerabilities in everything from the software that runs PCs and mobile phones to systems that control the electric grid.

Organizers promote such research in a bid to publicize weaknesses to users so they can protect against them and encourage software makers, manufacturers and others find ways to plug those holes.

A few years ago, some hackers discovered that you could just order the instruction manuals for a bunch of different independant ATMs (the non-bank-specific kind you see in restaurant entrances)..

What they did was order all the different books and discovered that the default password to enter "admin" mode was written in the books..

so what they would do is steal/skim bank cards, then send one guy out first to the ATM. This guy would press the button combination to reset the machine (sort of like a CTRL-ALT-DEL for ATMs) and then would enter the Admin mode with the default password.

Once in Admin mode, you could make the machine think it was filled with different bills than it actually was.. So, since bank machines are filled with 20$ bills, change the software to think it's filled with $1 bills... so when you withdraw 20$, and it spits out 20 bills.. so they'd use the skimmed/cloned cards and go withdraw 200$ on each account.. the "user" only gets scammed for 200$, but the machine spits out 200 20$ bills!

I'm positive that this is still possible, you just need to find ATMs that aren't "watched", like in a bunch of restaurant entrances.. just find out the brand (usually easy to spot, it's printed on the machine or written in the menus) and then look up the instruction manual online..
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

You used to be able to cause them to crash back to windows pretty easy too. Or reboot also. It was always fun to get your money, and then make the machine crash to windows lol.
I'm feeling groovy right now..

When I was growing up, I knew this kid named John who used to hang out at the arcade in the Galleria Mall. He had this old attari portable that his crazy mom showed him how to use, and he would insert a blank card into an ATM that was connected by ribbon wire to the portable. He then would use some crazy number code app to make the ATM dispense whatever amount he wanted!!!! He was pretty nuts, always spitting out lines like "easy-money" and "asta la vista baby"... Anyways, he started hanging out with this big biker dude and that was the last I ever saw of him...
