Meh.

Now that I've got that out of the way, welcome to the Japanese music thread.
I've arranged a sampling of Japanese artists for yah, many of which you most
likely aren't familiar with.

Each post of mine will cover a different genre and will include video clips,
music tracks, and live sets when possible. I'll also be including links to
stores, venues, and promoters so that if ever you're in Japan, you'll have a
few places to go to if you're looking for a party. I'll mostly be focusing
on Tokyo and the Kansai region. Even if you never end up going to Japan, you
might find a new artist that you really like.

You're getting a smattering of information, not a feast. For more accurate/thorough
information, you'll have to go elsewhere. I just thought I'd share a few things
with the [ rave.ca ] community while I plan out my next trip to Japan.

...

I'll start with Psytrance. When I get around to it, my next post will
probably be on dubstep.

PSYTRANCE (and its various cousins)

Japan's psy/trance scene has experienced some decline over the last few
years, though it's still home to a vibrant community of promoters & artists.
Large outdoor psytrance parties have started drying up after the disappointing
turn-out to 2008's The Gathering, which used to be the largest psytrance festival
in Japan. That was around the time that Japanese police had a hard-on for
busting raves. The promoters were facing heat from all angles, the bad press wasn't
doing much to bring in new people, and new laws were starting to choke the
outdoor party culture. Things got quiet.

Despite that, many stores and venues are still around. You can still buy tickets to psytrance events at places like www.fineplay.jp ] and [ www.881-rec.com ] Records are out there throwing parties, clubs like [url=differ.co.jp]Differ Ariake and [ www.ageha.com ] have the occasional psytrance night, and [ ] has a psytrance event nearly every day. If you're near a big city, you shouldn't have trouble finding somewhere to go.

VIDEOS:

DJ IRY:

This Nagoya based DJ started spinning psytrance when he was 9 years old
(and he's about that age in some of the clips below). He learnt how to spin by
watching DJs play at Namaste Cafe, a popular psytrance hangout owned by his parents.

TSUYOSHI SUZUKI:

Co-founded [ www.techno.to ] Productions,
which used to be a London based psytrance label. He's one of Japan's most famous trance DJs.

Tsuyoshi playing at Japan's Earthcore festival:

DRAP DROP:

They're a psytrance group on the ELF Music label. Here's there track Paponga:

the ELF Music artists. His song "Over the Generation" :

Fantastic Plastic Machine is great, I was going to cover him later. He's been around since forever, and kind of dabbles in everything.

This video of his is pretty nice --

Yah, I know this site has become something of a brothel over the years, but I remember when it wasn't. That was before your time, Thierry.

I'm just here to play nice and share some music.

You want to act like an asshole, that's your prerogative.

I know, so am I. I don't remember how long you've been on here. Hell, you might have had one of the first fifty accounts. I was one of the first five. That doesn't matter much, though.

What I do know is that this place wasn't always a brothel. The whores hung out on Ben's site. They hung out on Technodium. They only came here later. Now? Most of them are gone. I'm happy about that.

The fact that most of the cocksuckers on this site have left makes me so very, very happy that I feel downright musical about it. I just want to sing Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head whenever I visit.

...

*coughs*

Thanks for that Eurobeat clip, Rakoon. The Japanese bring cute to an absurd level. They have a very hard time doing dark -- it usually comes off as sweet. And sweet is a great antidote to the sometimes sour vibes we get here.

I'm glad you enjoyed DJ Iry, Kire! Damn shame there aren't any better videos of him out there, he'd probably be huge on youtube otherwise.

He was. My memories are a little hazy -- we are talking about the early days of a decade old internet forum. I might not remember him from then, but I do remember that this place used to be friendlier.

Now? I make a post sharing music with people and the first reply I get is Tipsy being a dick. Whatever.

One new name in Techno I particulary love

ASAGASOAUDIO
Dark Hard Techno with a little touch of ambient in every song.
In my head, I consider him as the unloved little brother of Yoji Biomehanika :P

I really love his songs and the guy is really cool too =)

Let's not get too weeaboo about this thread, Japan is a country with a huge population and many musical genres that are off our maps:

Guitar Wolf, a truly amazing garage band:

Nobukazu Takemura, a genius who had some truly amazing jazz/idm releases in the late 90s:

One of my biggest guitar influences, and an all around cool guy to hang out with, Tetuzi Akiyama:

Keiji Haino, the more "fashionable" noise master:

Taku Sugimoto, here in a typically understated duet with contemporary experimental artist Burkhard Stangl:

- if you watch any of this start it at 0:47 and turn off your monitor and lights, it's not easy to "get" this sort of austere improvised work

Woah oh oh! Not very ravey is any of that? Well the thread title was too open ended so I dropped some of my favourites from the land of the rising sun on you kids as if this was ihatemusic or something.
I'm feeling shkombombolated right now..
