Got a soundcloud then Host? ;)
Was only talking about the local producers I'm currently following. In styles suitable for a clash, too ;)

are we talking about producers right now? I've been making tunes for 5 years..infact longer than all the ppl mentioned

Sarcastic, Snork, Screwhead, Milton, Dialect, Reggie, FORTRESS???

How is it a soundclash if it's just dubstep? If anything those guys would all have to be on the same team. Maybe put Living stone on Bassdrives team or something. But yeh, thats the idea.

D&B vs DUBSTEP vs TECH/HOUSE vs HIPHOP or some shit, I know plenty of cats who would be down for something like this

hmmm. no. see I wanted to point that out earlier... that thing those UK guys were doing... D&B VS dubstep or whatever it was... it's mad hype, and clearly it was thrown by someone with a lot of money, cuz it's all a very slick well planned production with big big names

but that's not really what a traditional soundclash is... don't get me wrong...I think what they did is hype, but it's not a normal soundclash.

soundclash really only comes from reggae... some jungle people and dubstep people (and punk and breakcore and others) borrow from it but it's really just a reggae/dancehall tradition

normally a soundclash goes like this:

2 rival DJs or sound crews of *the same style* come and clash each other, they spend months preparing and getting artists into the studio to get dubplate specials done... spend craaaazy money on it... especially the underdogs who have to pay for most of their specials

so they come to the clash armed with mad dubplates ( unreleased tunes) VIP dubplates and dubplate specials (tunes where the artist has gone into the studio and changed the lyrics for you) and then what is called a "sample" - this is a dubplate recorded by the artist - brand new riddim and or brand new vocals - *exclusively* for you. something that nobody has heard before that clash and no other sound can play.

so at the end of it all - the crew who has the best stage presence and the best specials... the sound who can "play the other sound out" (meaning they can keep playing more and more ruff plates after the other crew has run out of bad tunes to play) wins the trophy. and, until they are maybe defeated at the next clash, they are considered the Champion Sound

sorry for all that text and I dont mean to state the obvious, for those who already know how clash works...

point being... it's supposed to be the same style ... otherwise it's ... apples and oranges

like... who's to judge? even with just jungle... if i had to play versus some new D&B DJ... if the corwd is a bunch of 18 year old kids who wanna hear wobble then my dubplates are gonna fall on deaf ears... likewise, if that same wobble DJ tried to impress a bunch of people who would rather hear the kind of oldskool that I play... well guess who's gonna win?

it needs to be alevel playing field, or else it's kinda of meaningless... it might be fun... but if you're actually gonna get in the studio to get specials done and whatnot, or have any kind of contest, it should be similar related styles

that's what I think.. I mean hey - do whatcha like I'm sure it would be entertaining, but it doesnt really prove anything unless the crowd actually understands and appreciates both DJ's styles

Why does it have to be the same style? The crowd will be "music lovers" and regardless of biased people, it's still a soundclash. Show up with your people, promote the event, if you lost that means YOU'RE the one doing something wrong, not the crowd. They're showing up to support you, if you can't promote yourself then you're just wack, straight up.

No one has money for that raggae soundclash shit - come on it's not 1982
The only thing available to us is a mock up soundclash, and it would have to span on different styles.
Otherwise where's the competition? A bunch of dubstep dj's battling each other with the same wobble every 3 minutes? You would HAVE to include different styles. Not everything revolves around one style.

The point of a soundclash is to weed out the best crew for originality, stage presence, performance skill, dub selection and crowd reaction. It's based on all those categories regardless of what style of music they play. If they make ppl go nuts, then they've done their job.

Yeh I mean a Dubplate battle is a great idea, mad talented ppl making music in montreal nowadays. And this UK soundclash thing is just breaking the mold, it's pretty next level imo. 4 Styles, 5 Rounds. It could span over a year, have the 5 rounds and all the winners of said rounds clash in a battle royal for the Grand Prix, which doesn't really have a prize other than ultimate respect. Each turn is 60 seconds. I dunno, it's a new idea. Dub clashes we're wicked no doubt and I respect the history, but now a days there's too many styles to keep count, it's really about making the crowd move and it should be for fun, not money. People who go to a sound clash usually aren't musically biased ppl, especially not edm lovers and the likes.

It would however have to be controlled, each crew would have to have like 4-7 members and it would have to be 100% dubplates, either yours or someone you know. Trying to keep in the tradition of the original sound clash. It's about blowing people's minds.

ha no worries man =) though it isn't history - it's something that is still very much alive and well! for reggae/dancehall soundcrews, dubplate culture and soundclash is a way of life.

I'll post up a couple of my favourite soundclashes - the ones where a lot of samples come from =) really good stuff - these dudes are serious entertainers... they put a lot of so-called Master of Ceremonies to shame. and you can hear some famous specials... some of them are really clever =)

but ya- a reworking would be very cool. I agree the UK thing is next level! I like the concept a lot.

I certainly wasn't suggesting we try and do clashes like the way reggae soundsystems do - lol!

not to mention- the vibe at some of these clashes can be like the Wild West - for real. I dont care how good the DJs are, I'd rather not have to wear a kevlar vest to go see em play - lol...

and it really can be like that too.. this reggae bar here in Hamilton got permanently shut down because of that, when Stone Love Soundsystem came to play there... about 15 years ago.

and with the whole dubplate thing... I would hardly expect anyone to cut acetates now in this day and age in Montreal. haha. why drop 85 bucks on something that wont even last, when you can play the .wav or mp3 that same night on serato or CDJ

that shit is the past - the only people who still cut dubplates are the purists - serious reggae soundmen or DJs like Dillinja or Andy C... and those guys probably have some very good deal with the cutting house and get stacks of dubs cut very cheaply

but for most other DJs, playing an entire set of acetates at 85 bucks a pop just isn't feasible

so ya once again - I dont think we should try to follow any rules of how dancehall clashes are being run - that would be silly

I was just pointing out that soundclash doesnt mean a clash of styles - it almost always meant:
one style - 2 sounds clashing

but like you guys are saying - fuck rules. so long as the crowd is knowledgable and open-minded to good music, I'd love to see different producers clash, like in that UK vid

do it up!

just one little video here before I go to sleep - classic... THIS kind of music I love.. I dont like the dancehall garbage that came out more recently ... way too angry and noisy and abrasive... but this - this is proper. gangster!

I'm assuming you're saying dubplate as in exclusive unreleased tracks and not acetates as intended by recoil... considering Montreal doesn't have a cutter (or does it?)

and yeah, that'd be sweet! we have loads of kick ass producers in the city making sick ass tunes... but the problem is, the people don't know about the tunes so much... an event like this could definatly make some of those tunes into local friggin' anthems! that'd be dope
I'm feeling lovely right now..

Yeh Dubs, 60 second turns all night, you wont be able to really mix more than 2 songs per minute anyways, should be sick!
