who would you want to see clash in Montreal?

you mean like local producers and DJs playing all dubplates - dub for dub?

I'd love to see competition like that, if it was done properly. have to have the right kind of tunes though. ones that you can drop right off the top and get a crowd response right away... lots of dubplate specials with VIP vocals etc

I'd love to see that for sure

no. I am assuming it means he spent 10K getting artists in the studio to record dubplate specials for him

yes

and no anto... getting buju banton to record a special just for you can cost quite a bit and then you gotta get it cut to acetate... and we are talking about a dancehall set here... badman must have played at least 50 tracks in an hour
I'm feeling lovely right now..

nice to see there are still people left who cut acetates... and even nicer to see serious specials getting cut! I would love to see Maysr clash someone... maybe Rebel Tone ...

one thing that irritates me a bit is when DJs who've never been to a cutting house in their life say that they play "dubplates" in their tracklist - when really they are just playing mp3s

anyone can play mp3s, but cutting plates is a serious investment of time and money. and if you are doing it the proper way, it means the producer has personally given you the master and permission to play it out.

specials are a little different - a dubplate special means you often have to PAY the artist to do a special version for you - it doesnt mean you personally know the artist,, it's more of a business arrangement.

reggae artists make a lot of money doing these specials for various DJs. however if you are a serious top-ranked champion sound (like Rodigan) they might do the voicing for free, out of respect

dubplates cost a LOT of money to cut and they get worif it is not a special the producer just given down every time they are played, so you only only cut them and play them if the tune is worth it

I have dubplates that I cut in 2005 that I still haven't played on the decks yet, cuz there's no point in wearing em out unless its for a really good reason. if I wanna listen to em I just play the .wav off the master CD, but I dont wanna fuck up the acetate - it's like butta

David Rodigan has some insane specials!!!... and ones fromartists who have passed away now - Bunny Wailer, Tenor Saw - so it makes them serious weapons for sound killing

I should upload a couple of his old soundclashes - you'll hear some mad dubplate specials =)

it was 10 minute rounds between 5 crews - all vinyl. Crews Battling we're Chopstick VS Hacksaw Division VS Subtone & Stalker (Fortress) VS In Da Jungle.

The finals we're Hacksaw VS Fortress, I say we won by default, it's kinda hard to lose when you're
the only crew that brings an mc and we kinda took the place by force. We had the place hyped ;) Otherwise Fortress should have had it, obviously.

word. ya I'd like to see more of that.

I played a versus match against 0=0 back in like 2003 at some club.. I forget who threw it now. but it was oldskool jungle - we played 3 for 3 against each other for the first hour, and then in the final round we played tune for tune ...

and that style of oldskool jungle / D&B we were were playing is custom-made for soundclash. some of those tunes, you can just drop the needle right off the top, and boom!

it wasn't a real soundclash - just a friendly versus match where the crowd response decides which tunes are the ruffest. obviously in a real clash against him, playing dubplates, he'd crush!! - lol. but it was all friends in the crowd and all in fun.

but bringing some compeition into the night def. livens things up. I would love to see some jams like that in MTL.

I'd *especially* like to see producer / DJs clash each other with their own production... whip up some specials just to play that night =)
