painting 1 shit a day is easy with a projector. Its like prostitution.
Yo even Gamos could do it.

lol...Mickos, i have no desire to produce or create art. Im more interested in the fascinating world of monetary economics and financial markets. So ill keep doing my research in that, and you can keep making art.

and for the record, IMO Regimentals is pretty edgy and cutting edge. It actually makes me think, and brings out emotions in me. It pushes the boundaries and makes me rethink my own preconcieved notions and perspectives. Its pretty cool; not too much shit does that.

Your art is good too tho Mickos. Keep up the good work

By immortilizing a penis in Micko's ass, Reggie is indeed projecting his own secret desires

On a more abstract level, this piece might represent good and evil, the ying and the yang, the cheech and the chong if I may put it simply

No...but at first I just thought Mickos was a real dick. But now I can see another side to it. Perhaps mickos is just a hopeless bitch who lets the world fuck his ass fucked raw. And while it hurts, he loves the pain. He lives for it. He can't help himself because he's addicted to pleasure the pain brings.

Nah man, I meet Mickos once in the metro, he's cool

I think he was just expressing his honest opinion on Regimentals work which is fine. He does make a good point about the "projector" painting, it does seem pretty simplistic no offense

That's like saying that a DJ is shit if he mixes on CDJs instead of turntables, or that a producer's tunes aren't good because he uses FruityLoops instead of Cubase..

HOW it's done doesn't matter, it's the end product that counts. If you dislike something, dislike it because you don't like the final product, and not because you don't like how it was made.. how it was made means jack-shit..

I agree with you there 100% Fred

BUT

If the art is merely drawing the outlines of a photo

Then how different is that from Tiesto playing a mix cd and pretending to dj?

well... tiesto putting an already mixed cd represents no effort or creativity in contrast to regimental's work which does envolve a lot of both those things...

I kinda see regimental's work as a sort of visual remix of existing images that are of different nature... the original image is still easily recognizable and (in certain cases) in a way linked to a very modern pop culture. By this I mean that regimental uses (deliberately or not?) images that pop up in google images, usually within the first few results...

this might sound insignificant to some and to others it might sound artistically offensive, but to me it makes these pieces modern in that it goes against the traditional values of art...

There is less importance on the subject and more on the interpretation of the artist. Using a projector to aid one in creating a piece of art that is naturalistic (mimicking reality as much as possible) might be considered a facilitator... but in this case, the goal is not to represent reality in a precise manner... the goal is to impose a certain style and method to a subject and to do it repeatedly and then move on to another subject.

In a sense this diversity of subject also acts as an archive of pop culture when you take pieces like the Kanye West "sit on it and spin" piece, it is relevant to certain events engraved in the collective minds of society...

Whoever argues that the dexterity of an artist determines the value of his art must also think that photography is artistically empty... techno music is "lesser" than progressive rock... that abstract is not art... There is a lot more to art than the dexterity or even talent of an artist.

Perusing what the impressionists had started, Pollock and all the action painters showed that that art could be between the artist and the canvas... the action of painting becoming the art itself...

Guys like Barett Newman and other artist of the color field showed that art could be between the canvas and the spectator... huge pieces with one or two completely flat colors can create quite a feeling!

Marcel Duchamp elaborated the idea of ready-made, using an existing object as a piece of art and taking out of it's functional context, displaying it as art... this is a stretch but the point here is to display how placing an everyday object in an artistic context, the perception that the spectator has of this piece is completely different... it is the spectator that creates the art through his vision of the object...

this idea connects with pop art in that it reuses existing images of popular culture and places them in an artistic context... Here the use of popular imagery makes pop art accessible to the general public... art ceases to be reserved for an elite and becomes something that can speak to everyone...

Warhol's brio boxes and portraits are a few example... you could make a parallel between Warhol's Marilyns and regimental's pieces... Although both ideas are pretty close Regimental's interpretation and subject choice is still modern... the style and materials can be associated to graffiti or comic book culture... even the fact that he chose to distribute it on a dvd is something that I find original and modern... all in all, I find his art to be very rich... especially when looking at the ensemble of his work

sorry for the wall of text

there is a whole bunch of other stuff I left out... I think it was Rodchenko, a Russian photographer who said when comparing photography and painting... when looking at a portrait, a spectator sees a global image of a person as seen by the painter as such, the portrait itself is what constitutes the collective memory of a person.

In photography, the image we keep of a person is not one in particular... because of it's nature... it is alot easier to take a great number of shots of a single subject... so in this case, being confronted with this multiplicity of images, the spectator forges in his mind the global image of the subject... kind of a mental puzzle of multiple images...

When you look at the multiplicity of regimental's work, there is also an interesting parallel to be made with Rodchenko's theories... using "iconic" images of people, he deconstructs the global image one can have of people and recreating them through his own interpretation of them... and multiplying the images to create global image different than your own.

well arguably, Tiesto would have put at least a couple of hours into his mixed cd before the gig to get it "just right"....then you have to factor in all the effort and time it takes to get to the gig, thats not even counting all the effort of faking on stage (pretending to mix, hands in the air, smiling etc...)

now, weather putting a photo you googled "undeliberately" in 2 sec on a projector and drawing the outlines for 8 hours requires more effort and "creativity" (sorry I loled) is definitely a stretch
even by Rodchenko's standards....but hey what do I know ;)
