Call it how you like but the U.S. army, the largest most expensive in the world is entirely funded buy the peoples, rich or poor, pro or against war.
No one would contest the importance of having firemen on call 24/hrs a day, payed for by the peoples.
They still pay taxes for infrastructure, pension plans, prisons, Wall Street...(!?)

Saying that socialism is "takin' maa money and givin' it to da next guy" is extremely naive. A certain amount of socialism is necessary in the U.S. for their whole system to survive. Without it, the U.S. would slide from chaos to totalitarianism.

Ironically, the good old American Values have way more in common with socialism than what Palin has to offer.

When you push capitalism to the extreme, you en up with monopoly's, witch is only a stone throw away from communism.
I'm feeling psymind right now..

It would be an interesting social experiment if they privatized the police force, fireman, and health services. See if and what the invisible hand of the market would weed out. Like who doesn't want to see ED 209 walking down the street and says "you got 20 seconds to comply!"

Man can you imagine if the police force was privatized? Depending on how it's done it would be fucking mayhem!

Idealy, the person calling in the complaint/whatever would be the one getting the bill.. And there goes noise complaints!

It would work like this: let's say Suburb Alpha needs police force for this amount of money ( within budget). Company A, B, and C all apply. But C gets the contract because they said the will offer the best service for the lowest price. But then what kind of service will you have?

And good old USA did that with Private Military Contractors/Companies (PMC) for their war in Iraq and Afghanistan. For example, infamous Blackwater had mercenaries or private contractor for 600$+ a day. But they started to recruit Chileans, former elite soldiers under Pinochet, for 1000$ a month. The whole privatization of Armed Forces is just mind-boggling, fascinating, and posed numerous ethics problems.

I just don't want to fathom how it would go if essential services was motivated by money and no scrutiny, considering the large financial institution/corporation mistakes of the last decade. This sexagenarian died of an heart attack because Private Health Contractor couldn't send paramedics since they declared bankruptcy yesterday.

lol.

actually i read a really interesting article about Blackwater and Falluja. concerning the 4 Blackwater mercenaries who got killed in Falluja and strung up on a bridge by the local militia...

I dont know if you remember that, but it was a huuuuge deal and sparked a massive bombardment of the town by the US army in revenge

well now their families are suing Blackwater, claiming that they basically got them killed because of their cost-cutting.

the week before, they fired one of their employees who was insisting on higher safety standards. Then they sent these four guys out into hostile territory in unarmoured vehicles and without a heavy machine gun or a map. They got lost, and wound up getting smoked. They don't even look after their own. Just all about about making the top guys as much money as possible.

Blackwater is a really evil company. They had these lunatics who had come straight from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan patrolling New Orleans after Katrina... walking the streets with heavy firepower, looking for trouble. America is fucked up

hahahahaha pretty much.

Eric D. Prince - though he resigned as CEO of Blackwater this past March. and Blackwater has recently changed its name to "Xe" to avoid the negative association the company now has with war wrimes in Iraq

He's a fundamentalist Christian and former Navy Seal who became practically a billionaire by inheritance after his father died.

According to two former employees, Prince "views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe," and that Prince's companies "encouraged and rewarded the destruction of Iraqi life."

Blackwater's gigantic base is located in "the Great Dismal Swamp", where they train 40,000 personnel a year.

here's an interesting video about some of the wicked things Blackwater has allegedly been up to... killing Iraqi civilians for fun, arms smuggling, murdering former employees, etc etc

I highly recommend the book, BlackWater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army by Jeremy Scahill.
The book came out before BlackWater hit mainstream media and became a household name.

But this goes way back in 1995 with Executive Order, a mercenary army of former South Afrika Apartheid soldiers. Angola had a rebellion in their diamond rich field, and they pay Executive Order 35 millions to quell the rebellion. EO took 2 days to retake the diamond fields, and 9 days to crush the rebellion. Since then, PMC became a huge industry.

If prostitute is the oldest profession in the world. Then mercenary is a close 2nd.

cool I will check that out. Ya I heard about Executive Order back in the 90s... If I am not mistaken they were big into hostage negotiation and rescue as well, in places like Yemen, where kidnapping wealthy foreigners is big business

here's another vid - basically Part 2 of the Blackwater scandals. interviewing that author that you mentioned. I didn't realize Blackwater had this Christian Crusader ideology, and I hadn't heard about many of these atrocities mentioned.

in light of these revelations, it's pretty shameful that Obama is still employing this company in Iraq. not surprising, though.
