Oh, I was also über-addicted to this : Truth : I've been periodically going through my speed garage collection for the last few years. Gawd bless fidget house / bassline house for bringing that back. ya man. Spin Spin Sugar remix was huge. I bought it when it came out but alas I sold it many years ago. in Toronto, Marcus Visionary started playing UK garage / speed garage (same thing) at the end of his Sunday night jungle/D&B Prophecy show, which I'd tape every single week cuz that show was the bomb. this was in 97. right away when I heard it it reminded me of the jungle I used to hear - heavy dub basslines - ragga and house diva samples... so after hearing him dropping these crazy tracks on his show, the next day I ventured out to Play De Record and picked up a whole bunch of really good UKG tracks. they were the first records I bought, long before I decided to start DJing. speed garage had a lot of ex-jungle producers runnin tings. like myself, they didn't like the direction jungle/D&B had gone. it went from being really deep soulful raw music with lots of women at the parties... into this metallic techy music, with sausage-party jams and lots of dark angry vibes. I'm not trying to hate. I love some techstep. but for a lot of original heads it was like - who stole the soul? so some producers, rather than following the D&B trend, jumped ship in 95 or so and started making what became known as UK garage or speed garage. they were making music for the sexy gyal dem, instead of music geared towards hostile white dudes. so to me it sounded kinda like jungley house. I loved it - and still do. there was great nights in London for UKG / 2-step. some great pirate-stations playing ruff dubplates and one-offs, with the DJs chattin over the top, just like the old days. I had my people over there send me some mad whitelabel remixes. good stuff. In fact right now I'm negotiating the purchase of a whole collection from this DJ I know there who played nothin but UK garage and 2-step and has since retired. that'll be nice, cuz he has great taste. and ya - that Double 99 track is great. that was one of the first ones I picked up this is Bump & Flex. classic example of an original hardcore jungle producer who started making really good garage, rather than D&B - he used to produce under the name Wishdokta, Ruff Rider, Naughty Naughty etc. badman producer. |
