hehe. ya I used to use it too, way back in the day, when I didn't know any better. I assumed it was politically correct, until I started dating this Trini girl. she schooled me on what the word meant, and how inappropriate it is.

starting in the 1600s, the English shipped over hundreds of thousands of Irish slaves to the sugar cane plantations in Barbados and Jamaica. They were actually treated much worse than the African slaves, and since they were taken from Ireland as prisoners-of-war, they were very cheap.

so, to make money, the plantation owners would increase the value of their stock by breeding their Irish slave women with African slave men, thus creating a highly valued "Mulatto".

"This practice of interbreeding Irish females with African men went on for several decades and was so widespread that, in 1681, legislation was passed “forbidding the practice of mating Irish slave women to African slave men for the purpose of producing slaves for sale.” In short, it was stopped only because it interfered with the profits of a large slave transport company."

Eventually over time, these full-blood Irish and "Mulatto" slaves were just absorbed into the African population and almost forgotten.

there is not much online, but I did find this good article about the Irish 'mulattos' on this Rastafarian website ->

^^^

oh ya. well Mulatto if used today would mean African Caribbean mixed with any white-skinned person, really. I was just referring to what it originally meant.

...and obviously nobody should use that term at all. the correct term is - mixed -

Isn't that a sexist slur targeted towards men who love men ?

So if I check closely, it seems white people are the only people that don't you use a derogative term to call each other. I feel we may have been missing out of something. You feel me, crackaz ?
