The Evolution Of Musical Taste...

When i was younger, it was all about breakbeats, anything with a break was cool, but as i've gotten older i have started to see what some of my friends who were into different stuff, saw in things like techno, i was spinning today (first time in weeks cause i've been busy with school) and i realized that i'm not as hot about my tunes as i used to be, i found myself wishing that i had more techy sort of stuff to mix with my booty records...

what do other people think...

have your musical tastes changed significantly over the years or have you more or less kept them the same?
I'm feeling surly right now..

I went to Eurodance to Trance to House to Electro to Tribal House to Techno.
Try to find a logical evolution in this.
I'm feeling pudcheveux! right now..

I find my tastes have changed, but at the same time kept some similarities from when I seriously got into music..

Way back when I was much younger, I was pretty much raised on rock (AC/DC, Dire Straits, Roger Waters, Clapton/Cream, Pink Floyd) and 50s stuff (Elvis, Chuck Berry, Ritchie Valens, Beach Boys..)

I had a manditory Vanilla Ice/MC Hammer phase, and after that I got pretty hardcore into Green Day and Weird Al..

The one that changed it all for me though was the Marilyn Manson album, Smells Like Children.. Total impulse buy; the cover looked cool and it was on sale, so I wanted to see what it sounded like..

Since then I got into 'darker' music.. Be it industrial, DnB, whatever.. for the most part, whatever I listen to or mix, it's got to be dark and have that edge to it.. It's got to not be something you'd just hear on the radio or that your grandma could get into.. Pretty much music designed to grate on the nerves of those who aren't totally hardcore into it (or into just the whole "darker and harder than everything else" mentality)

Occasionaly I'll dip into stuff that's more up-beat, but that's usually more the exception than the rule..

So, yeah, my taste in specific style, like Industrial, Metal, DnB, dubstep, etc.. has evolved (and will constantly), but my preference for a type of sound (darker and more menacing, more "evil" sounding) will most probably stay.
I'm feeling older right now..

That's usually how it happens.. Like the guy says in Scratch (never remember who it is lol, me = fail) "It's like hearing music I wanted to hear all my life, I just didn't know it"

That's pretty much what happened to me when I first heard some proper DnB.. It was fast and had a ton of energy, and you can really get any sound with it; metal, trance, hardcore, industrial, hiphop, electro.. It all fits in and can be remixed in it's own way into DnB..
I'm feeling older right now..

If i go from the begining, when i was young i was into dance music (mr vain and the likes) then i had a little hiphop phase (wu tang), but the i got into punk rock, then ska, then metal (from black to death, to power metal) and the i got into techno ("happy hardcore" first then hardtrance, nu energy...)

but still, i listen to all kinds of music, these were the music i was "into" the most

but i listen to almost everything except psytrance and counrty music

i like jazz, big band, old rock, new rock, metal, punk, old hiphop (80's 90's), pop music, dance (euro), techno (allmost all kinds except psy).
I'm feeling hardcore right now..

Sine i started dj'ing 21 years ago i've gone from mixing Samantha Fox with information society
to de la soul and rob base and acid hous(d-mob,adamski,to depechemode and revolting cocks then in 1992-94 tekno(fuse, moby, dhs,uk hardcore,c tank, marc nrg, laurent garnier, jam & spoon ugh!)
Then in 94-96 had a huge acidtrance craze(plank, important, spicelab, hardfloor, acid orange, rob acid)
Then got more into the chicago, detroit, german minimal tek.
Then played a lot in lounges and played triphop(mowax ninjatune)and loungy house(svec, johnny fiasco
After that played lots of d&b,jungle, breaks and dub!
Now since 2003 i've been playing all these styles and more in da same set, cause that's
where i'm at!

I liked punk and stuff like that when I was younger (generally the more commercial style, which is the only kind you know about at first) but I also always really liked cheesy euro dance and stuff like depeche mode so the transition to electronic music was a smooth one.. I was listening to trance and DnB years before I went to my first party even.

always a NIN fan though, I first heard the stuff when I was 10 or 11 and loved it, and got into more industrial afterwards.

^ haha!

my tastes don't evolve, it just piles up. i still like almost everything i used to, and even more stuff now...i don't see discovering new styles as an evolution, more of an addition.
I'm feeling you up right now..

Up until 2007, I was really into ska, dub, rocksteady and reggae and was part of a few different bands.

A few years back, I started getting into electronic music and started raving. At first I was into psy and happy because that's what my friends were into. But as I went to different parties, I discovered the wonderful sounds of old jungle and hard techno, which are the two styles getting the most play out of mp3 player right now.
I'm feeling bored right now..

when i was in fist grade my cousin would make me listen to metallica and nirvana... got into offspring, green day... couple of years later got, rage against the machine and nine inch nails...

got into metal when i started high school, the whole neo metal thing, spineshank, korn, staid, machine head... then sweedish melodic death metal, in flames, at the gates, the haunted... got back to nine inch nails every once in a while, and got into dnb (especially jump-up) though all the perfect drug remixes. Started volunteering in a cegep radio so I got to hear all kinds of stuff, from hip hop to all different kinds of electronic music, jazz, funk, dub and eventually psy

then went to a couple of psy raves, had so much fun i decided i wanted to mix it... listened to every bloody psy record that came out that year, going out to every rave, psy, hardcore, dnb... in parallel I was also listening to prog, electro and detroit techno. Then i went to hatcha and benga, and the bass felt good... I fell in love... i got into dubstep and renewed with my love for the whole bass culture... dnb, junlge, dubstep even breaks...

doing forward music montreal nights... promoting everything that revolves around the urban electronic music scene... love!
I'm feeling funkier than james right now..

My dad was a huge elvis fan, so growing up i got fed all his music. Not knowing what good music was back then, i was listening to the radio shit (in my pre-teen years) Then got into punk (Ten foot pole, bad religion, ect). After punk came metal (Dark Tranquility, Children of Bodom, Canibal Corps) and added that to my punk collection. As i started to discover metal, i fell into skateboarding and snowboarding and discovered groups like Dead Kennedys. after metal came my more hiphop phase (wu-tang, method man, limp bizkit) and right up until Eminim's 2nd studio album, i dropped it all for techno, thank's to a few E's !! :)

now i'll listen to almost anything, with preferences towards, pure techno, techtrance, psytrance, electro and progessive. :)
I'm feeling trigger happy right now..
