Plant: Sunrise Afterhours - RIP
Yesterday 11:14a - Disappointed

Hello All,

It is with great regret that I announce, mere weeks before our 4 year anniversary, the City of Ottawa has closed Sunrise Afterhours at Mavericks indefinitely. Mavericks is still in business and operating during regular bar hours as per usual... it is ONLY the afterhours portion of their event calendar which has been affected. This closure comes after several years of legal battles against the City. We did everything in our power to stay open and provide Ottawa with a place to listen to top notch underground dance music.

Following a legal victory against the City which resulted in a court order that Sunrise Afterhours be permitted to continue, the pressure against us from the Municipal Government and Ottawa Bylaw, LCBO, and several downtown condominium corporations was increased enormously. The City of Ottawa was finally able to underhandedly force the closure of Sunrise.

To spare you being bombarded with the details of *how* the City was able to close Sunrise, I will only say that I personally believe it was completely unjust, there was no reasonable motive behind their actions. Other than vindictiveness at being bested in court after many failed attempts to prevent dancing past 3am, there was no valid reason for the City taking the actions they did.

I know that sometimes a few people in the club scene who are uninformed like to start the gossip and rumour mills churning just for fun, so I have to stress a few facts:

This closure was not related to any legal violations. Through the entirety of it's run, Sunrise maintained a record clear of any issues with the Ottawa Police. There was no issue of violence or drugs or building or health code violations EVER. Sunrise Afterhours and the Mavericks venue always met or exceeded every condition of the City's "All-Night Dance Event Permit". Our patrons' health and safety were always among our top priorities.

The closure of Sunrise was NOT in ANY PART, due to decisions by Mavericks management... I must be clear on that. They have always stood by the Sunrise team 100%, and went head-on against the many unjust actions taken by the city. I can not thank Mavericks enough for all the support they provided us over the years, from spending money on renovations to A/C, bathrooms, soundproofing, the hours spent on the phone and in meetings dealing with the City's unjustified "concerns"... not to mention thousands and thousands of dollars spent on legal fees alone! Sunrise Afterhours, and myself personally, owe infinite thanks and appreciation to Mavericks for their dedicated support for close to 4 years. They always went above and beyond the call of duty.

Also, I personally want to thank each and every person who came through the doors and danced their ass off to some sick Sunrise beats. Without your continued support, we would not have been going strong for close to 4 years. You were the reason we opened every weekend, and we hope that we were able to put a smile on your face and a bounce to your step at least once. :)

The Sunrise crew have not given up on our quest to provide Ottawa with their fix of cutting-edge underground beats... we merely are forced to change HOW and WHERE we bring the beats to you. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for future events featuring the talented crew of Sunrise resident DJ's, as well as mixes we will all continue to share with you. And who knows... we may be up and running again with a new venue and a new brand of afterhours before you know it. ;)

RICK LAPLANTE'S BIRTHDAY PARTY MOVED TO HEAVEN on SATURDAY SEPT. 27th - GUESTLIST FOR 100 SUNRISE PATRONS!

On a personal note, it is my birthday this Saturday, September 27, and I was very much looking forward to sharing with all my friends some of the incredible new music I've collected over the last little while... SOOOOO many ill selections that I know you'd go bananas for!

Heaven Nightclub has always been a good friend and supporter of Sunrise over the years. With the cancellation of my Sunrise birthday party following this latest B.S. from the City, Heaven is still showing support by inviting me to play a birthday set at Heaven this Saturday! Details are as follows:

- I will be playing the opening set from 10:00 - 11:30pm this Sat. the 27th at Heaven (400a Dalhousie @ Rideau).

- I have generously been given a guest list of 100 people! Thank Heaven! ;)

All you have to do is come to Heaven this Saturday Sept 27 BEFORE MIDNIGHT, and tell Amy at the door that you are here for Rick's birthday, and the first 100 people pay no cover charge!

Hope to see lots of familiar faces out to help me celebrate! Thank you!

I'm actually really surprised that Ottawa hasn't been declared a 'dry county' yet...
I mean they've shut down 'raves' essentially...
They put a freeze on the market on how many bars can open...
Now they shut down a legit event that, in my opinion, can help curb drunk driving?

CITY OF OTTAWA : FUCK YOU .. SHUT DOWN THIS .. RIP SUNRISE
I'm feeling nuclear right now..

Meanwhile,(((STREREO))), one of the best fucking venue in north America is still closed and no one knows if it will reopen. With Aria and Fractal gone, Montreal is left with only the biker run Circus, the MP3 and a few Miami style, jet-set booze venues getting most of the quality bookings.
Fuck that, Montreal is turning into Ottawa

It is re-opening but not right now, as the city and insurance is dragging their asses to give the insurance cheque because it is an afterhours and really do not want it around!!! It will re-open just do not know when, i saw the damages myself and trust me it is bad!!!! It is going to take alot of time and $...The media was kinda correct on this one i would say close to and around the 50-100 thous dollar mark...The place is pretty much totaled, the have to take off the floor put a new one they have to re do the bathrooms dj booth...The list goers on and on...And it wasn't the fire or water or soot damages, it was the firemen who did most of the damages, but that is their job...And they saved stereo from being burnt to the ground!!!

But DATABOY
u r right...Until stereo re opens that is the way it is going to be...But stereo bar is still open...So we have hope!
I'm feeling frisky right now..

promoters were money envyy, and police wanted them out. i think there was a shooting too.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Mon Sep 29, 2008 @ 7:48pm
wwoooo dunno what i just wrote there, i meant the prob, was related to muney overgreedy promoters, fire exits, city renown drug joints, had some drug/rape stories going around... the landlord was wanted the out or something, but the city definitly wanted them out, they didnt have control in there and they didnt like it.

but seriously its been too long, was it there a crazy shooter went wild or was it red lit, na ether way,
that wont help havin xl & yaz play there a story above everybody, and that cast of artist they had... wOOOOSh!!
dont think an other place will top it for a long time..

but 4 story sky pub, with that karaoky with mado in that little room upstairs... i forged my cards to get drunk there underage so manytime haha, you could event see the liquid paper on my birth citificate but by the time they realise it i was 18. actually they only time they notice the flaw was litterally on my birthday and showed the the
tempered one... ah my gawd the times...

Well I'm from Ottawa and I think this sucks, I know sunrise or surface aren't comparable to mtl afterhours but this is pretty much all we had as an " underground dance club " ....... so I agree, Ottawa sucks but now it sucks even more.

Now, regarding the comment of mtl becoming Ottawa ..... here's the difference:

Raves and after hours are now forbiden in Ottawa, as for mtl ....... you have a privilege that Ottawa will never have, yeah that's right, people in mtl can throw rave parties and go to numerous after hours, you guys control the scene so get off your arses and make it happen !!!!!

totally an oxymoron at this point.. House and prog are like Tiesto-trance in that they're pretty much the Q92 pop-music of electronic stuff.. Nothing underground about it anymore, so the underground parties are all about things you don't hear in every single after-hours; music that's very much not easily accesible and radio-friedly..
I'm feeling over 9000 right now..

That nite at circus got put in the books for me it was that great!
