I'd imagine that underground would be best defined as music that:
doesn't play on daytime radio
doesn't play in clubs where a drink is 7$
doesn't play at large, soul-less, over-commercialised events like bal en blanc (if the party you go to is on the news for some reason OTHER than getting busted, you're not underground)
appeals to a group of people who don't "fit in" as compared to the average, every-day normal person (ie: if you wear your party clothes out when you're not partying, people point and stare and think you're weird)
I'm feeling fucking horny right now..

That went mainstream in the 90s,

And is used all the time on tv and the radio,

I mean even my 80 year old grandma in the UK knows what a techno beat is,

And thats hardly underground

Any thoughts?

i think things are perceived and are different depending on the country...or the continent

europe is sooooo different from america on that matters... i wish one day it.s gonna be like there here in america..

And to put in my two cents,

I thinks that tech music is considered underground for the simple reason that well, the masses, the people that listen to CHOM, CKOI and such are not exposed to it. So, The mass beeing what it is, labels shit they know nothing about as underground.

And the few lucky few who end up in the techno scene usually do so because they can't stand the masses no more. Hence, they just let the others dwell in their radiophonic crap.

just my opinion.
I'm feeling lonely right now..

Well, most people I know don't listen to techno because they think it's repetitive.

It's funny because all them have no problem listening to bland generic pop with a singer that sings the same 4 lines over and over again. But that's NOT repetitive, according to them.

I prefer it this way anyway, the less these people listen to what I'm listening, the more sort of " exotic " I feel to them and is a good conversation starter. :)
I'm feeling dancehall thrilla right now..

It is fucking repetitive,

Out of all the styles of electronic music,

Techno is definitely the most boring and uncreative,

And I've been listening to electronic music for over 20 years,

To me underground is stuff like ambient, dubstep, idm, hardcore, acid house, industrial, breakbeat, dnb etc...

All styles that you hardly ever hear in clubs

Just don't tell me *boom boom boom* is underground,

It isn't
I'm feeling like a million bucks right now..
