Some of you will ask : " Is this even music ? " but let's save that for another thread. Do you think Dubstep sounds like " unfunky white man's reggae " ? Post your rant here. Is there a dj or promoter you would like to hype or big up ? Do so here. All things dubstep in this thread. .... I'll begin by saying that The Dubstep experiment event at Vinyl some time ago was a success in all aspects. Very enjoyable. But I must say that I wasn't impressed, at all, with CHEF's set ( there I said it ), who dropped the " obvious " dubstep smashers and wobblers. Dubstep, rhythmically speaking, really doesn't have to be this simplistic. Chef dropped Martyn's remix of TRG's Broken heart ( the original is better by the way, and I wonder why it is not included in the rather refreshing Dubstep all stars 6 ) between two silly wobblers, which was nice. Hearing " 2D " on a big rig for the first time was great. I hear more and more Grime ( Slimzee, Skepta, Jammer, etc. ) in dubstep sets which is very refreshing. It was interesting to see how nobody even raised an eyebrow or a trigger finger upon hearing for the nth time that NIGHT VIP. Sets by the locals were better. Adam L and Kiffah get my vote for best sets of the night. Regarding Kiffah... Kiffah always goes for the deep plates that no other dj will play. Not only is Kiffah a great selector with a good sense of what works or not in the dance, but being the grand daddy of the scene, the originator so to speak, he doesn't lack that historical perspective that makes other dubstep dj's believe that today's dubstep is the best dubstep. |

 Coolness: 75630 | A lot of time I find that DJs get stuck on the idea that a set has to stay within certain confines. Playing dubstep, for me, has always been about exploiting the polyrhythmic potential. Floating in the dubbed out sounds present in the techno that labels like Chain Reaction have been espousing for years.
The interplay between rhythm sets is part of what is most interesting when DJs work the grey area between drum'n'bass and hardtek... The exact same thing can be done with dubstep and grime... |

 Coolness: 76215 | imo, most mc'ing on tracks is shite... im not opposed to the idea though, but i just dont think there are any mtl mc's that could spit on grime or dubstep and do it any amount of justice (whats the subject material? do i wana hear about spittin bars and merkin dudes on the plateau? i herd st michel is the new cracktown... can i get a 32 about that, ahha,lol)
im sure testing it out could generate some interesting cross-overs and things, but in general the hole idea scares me ... |

I just think it'd be a real interesting experiment to see how this stuff can be adapted to dubstep... might lively up the crowd yeah? |

but seriously, could it even be called grime or dubstep if mtl gets a hold on it like that? example: could Swedish doodz make convincing b-more? even if it was good... would it be more? ahaha! im totaly down for mtl creating its own sound though |

dubstep is becoming a relatively universal movement as opposed to uniquely based in london... When you look at it... hearing chef say that bristol is the second home to dubstep kinda shows how LON is open to having dubstep cross boundries and go worldwide grime on the other hand is quite different... even if i tried I dont think i could come up with an accepted grime mc that is from outside london, let alone england... its sort of a, "whats produced in e3 stays in e3"... the overprotectionnist dubplate culture is present here tenfold and so very little grime gets out of UK for any djs to spin anywhere else in the world and like i said... montreal mcs spitting about how they dig junior spesh would be fucking dumb... maybe it wouldnt be called grime anymore... but itd be nice to give a nice kick in the ass to the montreal rap scene and get original production for mcs them to rhyme on |

I think I met up with him when 'Snares and I played Vancouver in '01... interesting guy. We had similar musical interests/backgrounds... kept in touch for a while, but lost contact over the years. There seems to be a feeling that they're not doing anything unless they're talking, and it can ultimately detract from the experience of listening to a good DJ. I don't really know any of the local MCs, so don't get the feeling I'm pointing fingers at anyone... my opinion was formed years ago by MCs out west and all over the US. |
