this land would not be polluted, and there would be a spiritual society in tune with nature and all the critters had we not fucked them up from the start....

we (yes Ian, i'm using the term we) owe them more than we can repay....

we also fucked ourselves,Earth and all of mankind by causing this....think of the knowledge we've lost in the name of "exploration"....kinda contradictory don't ya think?

africans were enslaved in the US untill the emancipation proclamation was made..

should the US gov send all the grandchildren of slaves back to africa and give them big compensation packages?

no...we should enslave more people and make more money off their backs and then say "fuck you" when they ask for something for in return

i understand your point and agree that we can't go back to the begining of time, repaying people for everything their ancestors lost...but you're being pretty flippant about some serious issues...

oh and on the health care costs....i've used drugs for 12 years and i've seen many sober people who put a greater strain on the health care system than myself...

STRESS causes many more health problems than recreational drug use...

More often than not, i've looked at co-workers, wondering why i was doing 5 times the work for the same salary...so the whole "drug use=less productivity" arguement isn't necessarily true. That's more about taking personal pride in anything you do...whether cleaning bathrooms or being a lawyer...

i'm not being flippant about serious issues..

these are things i've thought about quite a bit.
i'm quite big on equality, allowing anyone more priviledges then others in society is a form of prejudice, and since they're technically a different race, it can easily be categorized as... dun dun dun duuuuuun... RACISM.

there is no reason in my mind why they should be treated any differently then the rest of us. if we keep this mentality that we somehow owe them something, then this can/will continue 7000 years from now when all ansetery has dissapeared, but you know.. they're realted, so they're exempt.

Ian...i forgot to ask...would you be pissed off if your parents worked their whole lives to provide you with a better one, and then when they died, your neighbors came over, took the house, got every penny your parents ever made and left you homeless and destitute as well?(cause they took your home and money also, since they felt like it)

And lets say you had kids, wouldn't they have a right to ask for it back since it was to be passed down through the family?

Naw...let the little fuckers freeze and starve....i mean, it's not like THEY worked for it or anything...

I don't believe it should go on for 7000 years but shouldn't we help them have the same standard of living we have? And please don't say they've had the same opportunities as you and I because they haven't....

dude, i've said it several times i think what was done was very bad, yes. BUT those who were mistreated are dead, the wrongdoing was a long freakin time ago. Compensating the kids of those who were wronged is useless.

heh, that sounds pretty dumb, at what point WILL the compensation be enough?

i say once those whom were wronged die, the compensation ends.

"i say once those whom were wronged die, the compensation ends."(so it would make sense to rape and pillage, then just kill everyone)

Can't you see that the initial act not only effects the people who survived but the generations to come? The futur generations are not on a level playing field...

I don't believe that tax breaks are the answer but can't we at least agree that we should do something to help raise their standard of living? Giving free shit does nothing....my father coached in/helped run a hockey league north of Mistassini...the locals tore apart their own houses (given by the gov't) for firewood.

Constant freebies creates dependency, not self-empowerment...

cajmonkey...you're on drugs...

humans can overcome any obstacle presented to them, so don't give me that "we owe them" crap

There have been many cases in history where someone who has nothing rises through the ranks of society by not accepting that where they came from dictates who they will become.

Determination pays off, and if a group of people stopped feeling like victims and worked together towards rebuilding all that they had lost, it could be achieved.

Ever read "The Alchemist"? You should...

I understand your views come from caring about people, but you must learn that the best way to care for someone is to let them forge a path, let them find personal strength by overcoming obstacles. There's a reason why they are in the position they are in...part of their life journey will be one of strife (weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee), for without strife, how can one truly test these great powers that we, as humans, were born with.

Think about it cajmonkey....

(this represents my true feelings)

i think anyone who wants to be party of our society should have to pay taxes. period.

however i also think people who want to live off the land and continue their lives the way they have been, should be allowed to, which means they pay no taxes. but the second they want to rejoin us, they have to start paying again. simple.

TWO things, for cajmonkey, (and dont take this wrong cuz i agree with most of what you said):
1) you said that "this land would not be polluted, and there would be a spiritual society in tune with nature and all the critters had we not fucked them up from the start...." had we not interfered with the natives. Well, I really don't think you can say that, because, given time, they would have technologically evolved just as far as we are now and nature would be just as fucked
thats my first argument, weak, but worthy i believe
2) You also stated taht "Constant freebies creates dependency, not self-empowerment..." There you said it yourself! If it creates dependency and not self empowerment, then why do we keep letting them depend on us? Give them less and less help so that they can sustain themselves! I agree that we raped and pillaged their land and that they deserve some form of compensation, but enough is enough. Can't they see that things will not go back to the days before the white man came over? ADAPT!
