Hi there! I'm working on a research for my english courses and I've chosen the origins of Electronic Dance Music... The 1980 part where "house" music and techno were beginning in Chicago and Detroit. I've watched the videos "pump up the volume" and "Techno Story" but I would ask you if any of you guys has any sources that I could read to adjust my writings.

Could you help me?
Thanks in advance!

You need to go back a lot further than the 80s.. Kraftwerk, Nash the Slash, Edgard Varêse (Poême électronique was made in 1958)

yeah, I actually made this part one year ago, but now the research I'm working on is more on Electronic Dance Music, gay black culture influences and beginning of the raves and not Electronic Music in general.
I know there was Musique Concrete and all that stuff that is dating from the end of the 40s but that's not what I'm working on.

jamaican soundsystems played a part. They weren't necessarily playing electronic music, but it was a template for the future...

and don't forget about disco. look up 'paradise garage'

Already seen it, thing is, sources are not really professional on this website. I mean, it's been done by a guy that otherwise of explaining a genre will say :(Quoting the Swedish Tek part) "If the Americans don't watch out their European counterparts are going to start making their music better than them (if they aren't already). And Americans hate it when they get upstaged. "
But at least, it gives an idea of which genres to look for and some keywords like Summer of Love, Disco's backlash or drum machine and house music.

Thanks for the advices guys :)

Genres I suggest looking up as having played serious roles in the evolution EDM and of house muzik :
-nothern soul
-disco
-dub
-motown
-funk

My personal pick for video to watch that talks about the evolution of electronic music would be : MODULATIONS

Good book with some chronology regarding EDM is : Last night a DJ saved my Life

not really dance music...
but if you're doing a project on electronic music you may want to cover that it actually started in early 1900's with instuments like this...

if it's something you are being marked on it could be benificial to have some credible history refs in there.
not to mentions that theremins are pretty cool cuz nasty hippy moms can play them with their big fat titties.

Undercurrents, edited by Rob Young, is a really good book to read for just general information on music, it's published by Wire UK, a magazine that has a hell of a lot of articles on exactly what you're looking for, so these are some really interesting essays on modern music. Examples of some potentially relevant material:
Recording Angels: the Esoteric Origins of the Phonograph, by Erik Davis;
Worship the Glitch: Digital Music, Electronic Disturbance, by Rob Young;
Automating the Beat: The Robotics of Rhythm, by Peter Shapiro
The Autobahn Goes on Forever: Kings of the Road: The Motorik Pulse of Kraftwerk and Neu! by Biba Koff
Deck Wreckers: The Turntable as Instrument by Peter Shapiro

Anyways, really good book. I've read it end to end. Might be useful, if you can find it. So would back issues of Wire UK.
I'm feeling virulent right now..
