Within the country, he was known as the worst oppressor of the people, and did very much what the capitalist system is mostly about; keeping the rich rich and the poor poor.

Guevara was not an angel very far from it, I mean he was a revolutionary, that meant killing soldiers, most of the thing you hear however today are propaganda made by former supporter of Batista who lost their mansion and Bordello with the Cuban revolution. In fact one of the reason of the revolution was to get the drug trafficking gringos out of Cuba. The funny thing is that the number one 'anti-Che Guevara' Félix Rodríguez ( [ en.wikipedia.org ] ), was linked to a lot of drug trafficking and also happen to be the one who executed Ernesto Guevara execution style. I also have to had that like I said Che was many thing not all of them good but to say he was a capitalist is almost absurd.

This reminds me a little about operation "Just Cause" mostly planned by George Bush (the father), to remove Manuel Antonio Noriega from power in Panama because he was helping drug trafficking (and also because he was a rogue CIA operative)...the thing is that the drug transiting in Panama under Guillermo Endara was actually more than under Noriega (this changed with the president that came after him (Moscoso and Torrijos).

Finally to come back to Che Guevara, I have to agree with you that I find very annoying how many people wear Guevara T-shirt and don't even know anything about him.
I'm feeling optimistic right now..

Sorry for breaking away from talking about Che, but I have to disagree with you on that one.
Che is a good example of the irony about certain aspects of how Capitalism plays on popular culture.
But I don't think you can compare what certain artists are doing, to a Che Guevera T-Shirt, or stencil, or even goth, or emo culture. Yes, some people are ignorant like that... But I don't believe that the artist who is making the statement is just ridding some form of bandwagon --at least, not always.

Ah, Che. Thank you, Screwhead, for echoing my sentiments. Such a poor strategist too. Bolivia, man! I'd sooner wear Stalin on a shirt (which stemmed from one of Anarkoid's stencil ideas) than Che; sure, he was a murderer and a disgusting man but at least you knew what to expect.

Street art is something I have a hard time with. On one hand, I'm utterly fascinated by the quality of some artists' work while under the pressure of actively breaking laws as they work on their craft. On the other hand, I too am upset at the way some artists handle their craft.

Take for example The Grocer. [ thegrocer.org ] I love the fun factor and think it's original. But what's the point? The point is, it's publicity for the pieces he sells. And that pisses me off. Taxpayers' money is spent erasing illegal publicity, basically. No message.

Now, Banksy has a few (messages, that is). I think he started with a political statement but one day, you just become redundant. So what is there to do? Make money out of it. I think it's sad, that it cheapens his message. Yet, at the same time, one who doesn't know Banksy's story might and most likely will be impressed enough by a piece to carry on the message with his own craft.

So far that's the only valid reason I find to accept the commercialism of graf artists.
I'm feeling creative right now..

A consumer culture is simply a culture that places the emphasis on you, the consumer, rather than the other agents in the economy (the firms, and the government). I fail to see what the problem with that is. And for those who say consuming doesnt buy happiness, thats fine. But the consumer culture simply advocates allowing each person to choose how to allocate their time so that they can choose the consumer goods and non-consumer goods (like free time to play games, and rave, and philisophise, and read and do art...) that make them most happy.

So really, hes attacking excessive materialism. Which is a problem depending on the extent that you feel we have an obligation to help those with aids in africa, crack-whores in Montreal, and underfunded disabled people in toronto.

Sorry, but it kind of bugs me when people mess up the two words. Because they're completely different (opposites really).

But yeah...cool art. I likey. I kind of want one of the pieces for my living room. It would make a great conversation peice. Especially when you're high.
I'm feeling swamped with work right now..
