Pro-Tip: If you were smart enough to donate to the guy selling lottery tickets at the computer, he had a stash of hidden earplugs that saved my life.

The venue was awesome. The times had, equally awesome.
I'm feeling belligerent right now..

Overrated... totally... I think I can miss dubstep parties if they're going to be this monotonous. It's not that I didn't have any fun, it's that every track sounds the fucking same, same bassline all over the place, same programming. Dubstep is mostly wack.
I'm feeling jaded right now..

LukeP - I am glad you had fun cause I think we all did, but...

I have a sensitivity to people saying "it all sounds the same" when a totally new genre comes around.

Initially I was concerned that 10 hours was going to be too much dubstep. But after checking out the direction that each DJ was bringing, and certainly after hearing the TREMENDOUS variety of tracks played, I would have to say -

You Are Deaf. D. E. A. F.

Sorry - I do not normally call people on this type of thing, but

if that night did not open up this music for you (awesome sound, great music, good vibes)

then all I can see is - good luck with that

Based on my own personal experience, you will (eventually) join the movement.

Come my brother...

Ok, perhaps my way of putting it is a bit harsh. But deaf people don't have a sense of key. I do. It was all in the same key, with very little variations. Dubstep in itself is not boring, but it can be presented in a way that doesn't highlight its variety. I've heard all sorts of stuff that blew my mind and this night was either too minimalistic or too predictable for my tastes.

The wobble bass formula is being used in almost every dubstep track (like a low distorted Juno with an LFO or something). This is what I mainly find annoying - it's good a few times but after every song is using the same sort of shape to their bass synths I get a bit cheeved because I work so hard to avoid cliches when I write music. Dub didn't consist of only one bass sound so why should dubstep?

Also I must mention I really like stuff by Kode9, Luke Envoy, and our local scene, which doesn't seem to be brainwashed by UK trends. But a caveat to you all, in the UK apparently people don't do anything but bob in darkened rooms to this stuff. We can't let that trend catch on. There's already enough shoegazing going on.
I'm feeling jaded right now..

Thanks for expanding on your reaction Luke - that helps alot.

Unfortunately all new styles share certain basic traits and it always takes a "leap of faith" to get beyond focusing on what they have in common. Punk rock is all about playing one guitar riff, dancehall is all about repeating songs using the exact same riddims, and bagpipes all have the same underlying snarl produced by the drones. What eventually makes it work is when you come to EMBRACE the sameness. I know that after a good dubstep night, my body and mind crave the very bass lines you decry.

But congrats on keeping your ear out for the cliches and more power to ya - that is how innovation and variety happen, an essential counterpart to the same same same.

As far as dancing to dubstep goes, I find I dance very fast to the high hat rhythms. Thanks to Space Ape for showing Montreal how it is done at the SAT this summer.
