mcko_s, i understand what you mean, but comparing art to buisness itsnt really apropriate, and if i follow your thing, depending if i want a party for me, then fine, dont put pink in your dark paint, but if you want to sell it, youl have to change your taste a bit for something more reachable, depending on what you want to do with the painting...

if you keep it dark, dont wonder why if it doesnt sell!
I'm feeling promiscuous right now..

Also agreed with Deadfunk.

I guess it depends if you want to make a commercial ($$$ making) event (in which case you arent asking the right ppl, you need to get on club forums and ppl who go to ball en blanc etc, ppl with money) or want to make something special for you.
I'm feeling booooored right now..

'... just cause you like music, have turntables, an amp and spend money on records to play for other people, maybee even on several different occasions it doesnt make you a dj; in the sense that, if i have an idea of a house in mind, i go buy tools and material and build the house, and even if i do it a few times it doesnt necessarily make me a contractor.

yeah totaly, but as you build your house or spin the record, you have a goal.
Fortunatly that goal is usualy to achieve a brilliant skill of your.
So when you spin, at the exact moment of doing it, are you or are you not a DJ ?
I understand your meaning, this is my main philosophy on art '' Im a creator only when my essence is in contact with the medium, the material that is a support for my canalised creation'' as for, as the exact moment of build the foundation of the house you are a charpenter. this is a debate that relate humility versus pretencion.

i start to love deadfunk more and more

thats the point my friend, there's nothing truly bizness about throwing a party, isnt? It's about creation, sharing taste and personnal philosophy, as for painting.

Put it this way, the noise scene doesnt much fanatics but some people like it the way it is; raw and brutal. Does it mather for those who like it that just a few people like it ? Passion is not a question of quantity, but a personnal mather. Art is nothing to do with bizness. And in my philosophy (as for painting and other medium of creation) throwing a rave is a way to construct that identity that people got inside theirselves. So, its YOUR choice to decide that canalisation have money for goal. But on my opinion, that kind of goal will rot inside of you, making you only loose that real ascention of understanding your truth.

I don't see myself as a promoter of my specific genre though, although I am most certainly going to have psytrance played at this party, I personally like dnb, breaks, electro, hardcore, acid, etc..

I love music in general and my primary goal in throwing this party is NOT to hear my booked DJ's play, it's to throw a kick ass [ rave.ca ] friendly party. I want to create something with YOUR help because I want it to be everyone's party, I'll just take care of the dirty work in setting everything up.

Besides, it must be said that I have contacted almost every single promoter I know, and they all offered help in one way or another. This is truly to be a party by the people for the people, i wouldn't have it any other way.
I am so far aiming for 3 rooms, two main, one chill. Everything could change though as I will be polling as many people as I can on every single aspect of what they consider the IDEAL party.

I don't think I can please 100% of people, but that won't stop me from throwing a kick ass event that anyone with love for music and for the nightlife scene can appreciate.
So i'm not asking for you to tell me how to do what I will, but your opinion DOES matter. If I wanted to paint a painting for myself, I wouldn't expect anyone but myself to show up to my expose of it.
I'm feeling turkey right now..

you like to help, thats great, thats generous! but what is the salary you got for it? what does make you proud of helping other? the achievement of the creation, or the recongnition of other?

myself, earlier:

Check, example`: take circus promotor. What is their goal? to make money no?. . What is lacking on their party? authencity. Why, because that goal is selfish and very naive. Socialy speaking, our occidental world lives by those protocol; a corrupt idea that you have make something good when the mass is afluent and willing to pay for it.

I'm not in this to make money, I'm in this to take the best aspects of every party I've been to, learn from the raver's wants and needs, and in the end, bring everyone together for the kind of event you make friends at, see something new, discover why you loved partying in the first place. I am on a mission to do what a lot of promoters already do, but instead of telling you what you like, I want to hear it from you.

One way or another, I will be throwing a party I can be proud of, build a reputation with, but not by buying it or tricking anyone into it, but by providing the widest possible potential for enjoyment for everyone.

I am not the painter, but the man who makes the paint, the party will be the canvas for everyone to add their own styles and opinions and individuality. If the public doesn't want to be part of the creative process, then I will have no choice but to fill in the blanks. So far, a lot of you have been heard and I promise you will all see results for your efforts.
I'm feeling pondering right now..

very paradoxal. But i do understand you position. Its a very wise and clever position. reading it, i understood what is important in your creative process. In french it goes ''l'union fait la force'' -''Union is streght'', deux tête vallent mieux qu'une ''two heads worth more than one''. think about our scene, what do we need exactly? what does a commun raver need?
first will come all those futile thoughs ''ventilation, good sound system, good dj, etc''
but overall, what is the engine that make a rave memorable?
From where the hype is from ? exaltation?
Concentrate on those question. What does make a rave memorable? once again, authencity.
So on your vision that I truly accept and agree with,
the best thing for you to do would be to make a rave that reflect our scene, our eclectic and large taste.

Mikos, you make a great analogy so I would like to take that ball and roll with it a bit...

Should a painter decide "I am an impressionist" or "I am a surrealist" just because society dictates the need for a pigeon-hole? If as many an art critic, art professor, and philosopher of our so-called post-modern era has been observing, postmodernity is characterized by the appropriation of everything that came before, then the mash-up, the confluence of all ideas, genres, classes, and styles, is the most relevant form of expression today.

What I mean to say is, rather than saying "I am an -ist" we obliterate the -isms and go forth replicating everything that we have ever sensed. For music (as with art), I feel that this culmination is to become an extremely prolific creator of anything we like, regardless of what cadre it falls into. Personally I find that the only thing stringing together all my creative expressions, be they visual art, music, theatre, how I dance, is me. There isn't an external idea that I subscribe to.

Likewise I feel that, as you said last of all (fucking stellar point btw) "the best thing... to do would be to make a rave that reflect[s] our scene, our eclectic and large taste." BANG ON. Many of us are frequenting many different parties, loving every one of them, wishing it would come together, wishing for a sense of unity in the midst of it all. I think the ideal party is hence one that pleases everyone, without having to try too hard to do so. Our "scene" (if by that you mean the members of this online community) is eclectic as hell, so I see the culmination of that idea being something like a Teknival where each genre represents, without hating or competing with the next stage over (like, don't point your speakers at the other stages and turn it up to drown them out, that's just rude). It's happened before and we all know it. It can happen again. The key is to not let it turn into some corporate WEMF crap, but for it to be open and focused on a union of tribes so to speak.

Besides all that - I feel that the most important thing each of us can do is network, encouraging the people who have the connections in each scene to make the best of them. It is not important that one person takes the helm and does all the uniting themselves. Otherwise it is nothing but oligarchy, hierarchy, a popularity contest. It is more important that we promote people we know who are creators of the sound, of the music, of the expressions, that we do the best with what we have at our disposal, that we use our networks to foster unity. And as any writer will tell you, you must go with what you know. Don't delve into a genre of music you know nothing about, but rather get specialists their genres and encourage collaboration. Because I'm sure that's what we all know best - making friends and contacts, getting them working together, being a liaison, each of us a little hub with millions of spokes that branch in all directions. Express, and encourage expression, and organize a community. Done, you say? Then the next step is to decide what this community can do together to create the ultimate bad-ass party.

Sorry if I sound like a dork in all that, but that is what I see as being the nature of life. And it's best to flow with what is natural.
I'm feeling ultraviolent right now..

And in that spirit, hopefully I wind find a beautiful outdoor location where I can set up a stage of my own genre, and encourage and aid others to set up other stages, so that we can combine our efforts into creating something for everyone, and everything for someone.
