 Coolness: 38820 | all this electro dissing aside, there are actually some GOOD electro tracks out there... this thread is dedicated to those tracks... the positive side of electro... robot voices and 8 bit samplers kinda thing...
plenty that I like a lot, but my vote today goes to "afrika bambaata: metal"... it's got all the elements that I like in a quality electro track... |

 Coolness: 37145 | Electro is the new dump-genre of the electronic scene after "techno" and "electronica" went out of style. If it can't be easily classified under house, hardcore, breaks or trance it HAS to be electro right? And whatever "true" electro might be, the genre is still quite freaking large.
At the moment, Dragonette - I get around (midnight juggernaut remix) takes the cake in the vocal category. Princess Superstar - Perfect (exceeder mix) in the same category. The brand spanking new Justice album is to die for IMO, it's pretty much the new Homeworks. |

| Coolness: 127835 | James.. point taken. Yet on the other hand Ive tried desperately for a respectable ammount of time to figure out what elecro is exactly, and so far have come up empty handed. Peoples suggestions are always directly related to another style, electro psy, electro breaks, electro house, electro prog, electro house, minimal electro etc... or it simply sounds like any random 80's pop tune minus the vocals... hence my conclusion. |

when electro became *hyped* i promised i was never gonna like it wtf is electro anyways i was wondering and through the years i found the musical response to that question in the form of music that comes close to what was electro in the Detroit years for example it makes sense , the circle looks complete to me i accepted electro lol now i'm diggin it but still, to me its all techno ...or well ...its all music ...fuck categories u know what sounds makes you feel good thats the whole point |

The origins seems to be in oldschool hiphop and was called "Electro Funk". Basically the remnants of the 70s funk, meeting with 80s attitude and machines I would guess. Then it disappeared for ages. From my understanding. the term came back with Electro-clash.. Ladytron et al. It's true that "electro" is being applied as a qualitative more than as a description of a particular genre. Electro house.. electro-breaks.. electro-clash... And in most cases it's just that.. house with a certain flavour.. breaks with a certain flavour. But that's been done with a lot of genres too. PsyHouse, PsyTech, TechTrance, BreakCore, TranceCore and the list goes on and on. To me, and that's my very personal opinion, "electro" as a qualitative is when you have certain elements such as octave bass playing an epic pentatonic, overuse of the triplets setting at the end of a bar, and the general "jaded clubber on an egotrip" attitude. As for electro as a genre of music. To me its something like house music that doesn't take itself seriously, with an overkill approach, and very raw almost unprocessed electronic sounds. There seem to be no set rules to make electro...you can breakbeat it, distort it.. whatever it's all good. |

 Coolness: 73155 | In my humble opinion, I think Electro is really just "new wave or synth pop" music of the 80's remade on better equipment. Image if "sweet dreams" was made now, and you get like Ladytron or Felix da Housecat. I think anything new that comes out is automatically gonna come out with trancier or broken beat type versions. Like, house, trance, techno, breaks, jungle, hardcore and ambient, are part of all of our roots. Think of it, if any new genre is ever conceived it's gonna fall into one of the existing sub genres. |
