I was just at the depanneur and some guy asked me 'tu travaille pas ici?'... 6 syllables, yet somehow he managed to fit it into 3 syllables - 'vai-pas-ci?'... I had to ask the guy 3 times to repeat himself before I understood him... I felt like an idiot... I've met a few people in this city who really hate people who can't understand their french, BUT to be fair it's not the most accessible french in the world... I could totally understand someone being brought up in an english family in the west island and never learning french here... why?, because it's impossible to understand... I can't say i'd blame them, I know a few who've tried and failed... I'm making progress, but mostly because my girlfriend is french... Another thing, when I go to france and speak broken french there, I always get praised for my efforts and get told that I'm doing well... When I speak broken french here, I get quite a lot of attitude off some people... On the other hand, some of the french speakers I've met in Montreal are the most decent people I've met here, and are very nice about my lack of understanding of their language, and also I appreciate and understand the history behind it... I am after all, Irish, and we're not strangers to oppression from the british either... It doesn't mean I hate on every single person with a British accent I meet though... |

 Coolness: 144850 | dude, I'm french and I find "joale" to be kind of annoying too. Someone who's going to take pride in his or her language should at least learn to speak it properly.
When it comes to the french english situation in Montreal, I think most people should at least try to speak both. |

Genre "Les Belles-Soeurs" de Michel Tremblay, malade! ^__^ N'ah, on a notre langue propre au Québec. Faut bien parler, mais de là à parler en Français International, y'a des limites ;) Mon père dit que si les Québécois font plein de contractions de mots (ex: j'té, y, pis, 'garde, etc...) c'est à cause qu'à -40 l'hiver, t'as pas le choix de parler vite, sinon ta langue gèle  |

 Coolness: 42955 | pi de toute facon, les anglophones font la meme chose, les hispanic aussi, etc.. Ya des anglais je comprend sans probleme, et d'autre qui mache et abbrevie tellement leur mots que j'ai de la misere, faque ca va pas mal des deux bords |
