your manager recently hired this guy at your work (to give him a chance - he felt bad), who has missing teeth, presentation is awful(I work in a stupid office and you gotta look presentable)he smells, wears bad clothes, has A.D.D. among other problems and does a very bad job and is putting us behind. I trained him for 2 weeks - still doesnt understand the damn job. BUT he lives with a bunch of coke head psychos that beat him up (missing tooth), and he is trying to move out and needs the money. My manager keeps asking me if we should fire him.
What should I do???
I'm feeling fabulous right now..

his own good welfare is not your responsablity. And I'm assuming that you don't work at a low scum job like McD's

it sucks..but clearly this guys needs to be taught a thing or 2 in the job world.
Can his ass but suggest that he seek a job placement agency. Most of them teach you how to make a proper cv, teach you the important things about presentation, social skills, etc..

why your boss would accept such an individual,is beyond me.
I'm feeling my "no no" spot right now..

My manager is an idiot. Well he isnt really my MANAGER. We dont have a manager now. We are looking for one. This guy is the manager for the time being(shouldve been me but anyways). He is a softie. My head boss is fucking pissed he hired this guy and wants him fired but my manager doesnt want to cuz he feels bad so he is trying to convince him to give this guy a chance, and have me talk to the boss. I know the stats of this guy best since I was his trainer/supervisor...and he is fucking slow and terrible for the company. I dont want to sound superficial, or snobby but this is a business ....
Also, we are having our x-mas party tonight at this really fancy place in the old port...we are all dressing up..he is wearing ripped jeans and a metal t-shirt....didnt wash his hair...missing teeth......they might not even let him in the restaurant!! I feel so bad!!
I'm feeling fabulous right now..

probation period?

for what?

if anything... waiting till after x-mas will allow him to clock more hours and make him eligable for e.i.

not to mention it reduces the chances on the guy throwing himself in front of the metro...

What are we gonna do with all the trouble heads who can barely fit in today's society ? I'll send money to Sun-Youth or better than that, I'll go to the SPCA and adopt a poor little Dog... This will surely cleanses my mind from all the Urbain Suffering that Surf the Streets of Montreal. Thank God we have those charity organisations who can relieve us from the poor.

It's that time of the year were we should be able to open our heart and welcome the less fortunate but in reality some of us prefers to organize a plot to gently fire someone from his job. Who cares anyways about a guy who has missing teeth, presented itself awfully, smells BO, wears bad clothes and on top of it does a very bad job. I guess it's no ones responsibility. He's the master of it's own struggle, isn't he ?

Looks like this guys is poor, he also might need a bit of help, I mean, just some plain human help but it looks like hes not at the right place to get such empathy, in a corporate world where machine heart are more valuable than human heart this guys has no chance of surviving, or very little. It's funnier and more entertaining to gossip about someones misery than to take action to find solutions.

Let misery rules this Earth, let the poor get poorer cause a machine needs no love what it needs is machine man with machine heart that will generates quarterly profits for eternity. The poorer the easier to dispose off, slavery of the mind for all the classes under the Bourgeoisie.

The middle class worker wont help the lower class dude cause they're already struggling with there own financial issues, living in a poor neighborhood and having to share some space with the less fortunate is a despite for the middle mind. They don't wanna share the same desk. But as you can see, the middle class is fading and un-doubtably gets poorer every year.

The decision of firing someone is purely financial it as noting to do with human suffering or salvation of one's soul. It's no one responsibility and you know the rules of the game, whit just a bit of hypocrisies anyone will get away with it (///_v)

Well said , sadly I agree, as I HATE the corporate world. I am also struggling heavily financially, but its by choice as I am paying for school, gym to stay healthy, life and home insurance, and debts I need to pay off that I used to buy furniture with. I dont feel bad as I worked hard to do something with my life. Now I am paying the price! I do not plan on staying in an office forever - I want to work full time at my second job at the animal clinic...wages for that field are super low but worth it...
I dont ever want to be considered a top exec as I hate that world...anyways my point is to try ...
This guy I guess didnt have chances...anyways I am sure he will be out after x-mas...

From a humanitarian perspective you should keep him on payroll but perhaps transfer him to a different department where he wont hinder the company;s production. If he continues to work with the lack of efficiency, professioanlism, presentability, and business ethics one would expect from any office employee than his very being there not only counter-productive financially but reflects poorly on co-workers, the department to which he's assigned, and the business as a whole. If anything, keeping him employed would teach him how to improve his work habits and give him the opportunity to work towards self-improvement so morally you'd be doing the right thing by keeping him on staff. The fact that he wants to work and makes the effort instead of going on welfare or some other lazy alternative makes it hard to just fire the guy so I suggest demoting him to a position which would require him to work on simpler tasks without lowering his salery cause doing so wouldn't do anything except demotivate him further.

One of my old employers was out for lunch one day and a homeless man near place des arts asked him to spare some change so instead he gave him a business card and told him to show up at the office for his new job so he could get his life back on track. Needless to say he wasn't the most efficient or productive employee but he ended up working with us for over a month and was extremely appreciative of the opportunity given to him for no other reason than it was "the right thing to do". I suppose as a businessperson, keeping an employee on staff who's causing the company to lose money in the long run is definitely a bad decision but not all employers or supervisors are completely heartless which is why it's so difficult to fire some who's desperate for the job even if they're extremely incompetent.

Look at it this way.... If his job resta on your shoulders and you tell your boss to fire him it'll give you a guilty moral conscience, save money for the business, and potentially get you a promotion to a managerial position to replace the temp for taking a positive business initiative as opposed to the temp manager who's simply looking out for the employee as oppposed to looking out for the greated good of the business and all of its other employees as a whole. however you may not even get the promotion, increase in salery, or recognition from your boss for making the right business decision which, consequently, might make you feel as thouogh you made the wrong decision. On the other hand if you suggest keeping him on staff in his current (or different) position he may continue costing the company profit, which in turn could reflect a decrease in yours, and other employee saleries to compensate for the loses cause by "the weakest link" which obviously wouldn't be what most employers do but the possibility still remains. More likely would be the probability of your boss keeping him on staff as per your recommendation, therefore causing him, and or shareholders to lose out without any other employee salerie cutbacks which in turn wouldn't affect your financial situation ona a personal level. There's also a possiblity that your boss (not the temp manager) has already made his decision to keep ro let go of this employee and has simply asked your opinion as a "control question" as a test to see whether you're more naturally inclined to make moral or business judgements in such a situation.

Honestly, it's a very difficult judgment to make when other people's welfares are involved. Speaking from my own perspective, firing employees under any circumstances (except for theft or employee misconduct) would be a very difficult task for me which is possibly why I have yet to register and start running my own business. Inevitably, I suppose that every business owner needs to accept the fact that the capitalist system is designed to advantage of people and resources in order to accomplish personal game. Businesses simply don't profit or succeed without directly, or indirectly decreasing the quality of life for other people, animals, and the environment so realistically, progress in the business world is dependant on degeneration elsewhere or you'd have an imbalanced financial equation.

Oh wait a second, the United Stated National Debt is currently at 8.6+ Trillion dollars so I guess the equation already lacks the balance it requires to maintain it's ongoing stability anyways. I guess we're all gonna get fucked someday.
