Yeah this isn't a thread about why the scene sucks or where all the ravers went. I wanna know what was the last thing at a rave that really impressed you ... the last thing you saw that made you think 'Fuck yeah ... only at a rave'.
I'm feeling harder dec 16th right now..

That time we got locked in a basement. Cuz only at a rave someone would be unprofessional enough to think it would be a good idea.
I'm feeling lonely right now..

Apart from Time Machine, I think the last thing that made me go "fuck yeah" was E.N.D.'s set at HAF666. This is the last time I really had fun at a rave without feeling jaded. Good music and a good vibe (in that order) is what it's all about.

hahahaha when i actualy really think about event as a rave( with all what's that implicate!) the last one was this happy party on masson street in maybe 2000?!

it was a little room but very loaded and u can feel the vibe on the dancefloor..sudenly, cops came in or firefighter, open the light...some ravers were walking on the crowd telling us to sit on the floor for protesting.. finaly the crowd just exited the place and we were like maybe 60 or more? homeless ravers on the street.. pretty..chaotic.. but like kind of peacefull..
majority already stone and in needing of music..

i ended up the night dancing with other people on a maxx and pat davis set in a laundry room all set-up.
i remember that people were dancing so much that the windows were full of steam.. crazy night..
too old for that now...

also in 95-96 i hang out for a while at the lab. i think it's the place the most cool i went for party.
it was a few floor manufacture type of building and all kind of people were there. one floor could be rockpunk, and a rave can happen too. the basement was alot of rasta who were playing tamtam.
.and everybody were sociable and kind of civilized.
i have strange souvenir about this place and dream about it alot. so much character i met there who nourish my screenplay's moovie persona!
I'm feeling ok right now..

When promoters actually walk the walk and not talk the talk.

Man, Montreal can be pretty damned jaded huh! Although of course the music and the vibe are two things that are definately needed at a party, I'm wondering about the extra shit that a promoter did to impress you

Well, I can say that a lot of people at Time Machine told me they were impressed by the decorations and free fruits. Little details like that can really make a difference. This is the kind of things that can set your event apart from all parties happening every weekend. I also found that good promotion helps create a hype, making the party even better.

Werd.

That last raves that impressed me were Outerspace Energy, Invasion and Eclipse 2003.
I suppose it was all due to the whole new experience of raving, for me, but really it all had to do with the feeling of excitement -you know: picking up a flyer and checking out the headliners, calling the infoline, taking a shuttle to some far off place or organizing the lift with a bunch of friends to get you there. Back then, considering those three raves, the promoters would throw fucking RAVES!!! They were massive parties in huge venues, not to say that the little underground parties weren't awesome, but they particularly had all sorts of different appeals to them. Whether it was a new venue, a melange of musical styles, deco or wehatever... I guess as long as it was something new, it impressed me.

Kind of like what Lone star said: if the promoters really put the effort into their parties to make them different or special, then that's impressive enough.

With that said, i've always enjoyed NTK parties. Those mofos know the deal.

What kinda decorations did ya do that worked well, D?

I agree what's lacking is often effort to 'think outside the box', where in this case the 'box' is 'dj + sound system = rave' mentality.

Cool lights, cool decos, cool visuals, live performers, etc etc.

Actually, it was more the actual effort of decorating the place that impressed people. The decoration concept at Time Machine was actually splitting the venue in 3. The area next to the bar (it was at fractal) was separated with a curtain. It was decorated with UV reactive stuff, and they were blacklight. This area was the chill room. There was a pacman game, and place for people to chill and rest a bit. Then, there was dance floor. Visuals where projected directly on the people, creating some sort of "vortex" effect, that fitted with the time travel theme. The last area was around the bathroom and coat check. These where the spots in the rave with not blacklight or spotlights, where people could talk and get "away" from the excitement of the dancefloor or the chillroom. There was also a timeline surrounding the venue, with flyers from many of Montreal's raves.

Overall, the decoration was made to look impressive, while it was quite unexpensive. We played around with the theme, and also tried reminding people of the flyer's design. I also can't take all the credit for this. Most of the work was done by Aerial Raver, and it couldn't have been done without her hard work and ideas.

Talk to me on msn if you want ideas, i can help you out :)

I agree with D, as he said: If you can create hype, then that will create appeal for your party.

For instance: I'm looking at the calendar and I see Terra 3 all the way in August. Just the fact that its "Terra 3" makes it totally sweet (and others agree with me by the looks of the comments). Regardless of what the lights, visuals, deco, DJs, sound system -as awesome as they may be, the hype that surrounds it makes people want to go and gets them excited. I'm no psychologist, but when i'm excited to go to a party I tend to have a better time than the usual rave every weekend (unless it's free)... Otherwise, i'd just go to an afterhours. I mean, they have awesome sound systems, international headlining DJ's and lighting thingy-ma-jiggys that destroy anything that most raves put up... and they suck. So yeah, HYPE IT UP!!!

I dunno.

Overall, it's easy, you just gotta put the effort into it, and a lot of promoters are too lazy. (not pointing any fingers) Just throwing a party takes minimal effort, but making it really special does require a promoter to get up and work hard.

Well i think many promoters aren't lazy, but when you're doin a big event and you got 1001 things to do, the first thing that gets the cut is the decorations etc. For me, part of the reason for doing the HARDER party on the 16th is so that I can concentrate on doing some new and inventive decoration / atmosphere things. We're spending most of our budget on a multi-monitor + projector setup, plus a crazy backdrop. I definately wanna talk to you D about some other ideas too.

Yeah, that's why I loved having someone else take care of it, hehehe. Beside, they're some very talented deco artists around who are just waiting for an opportunity to show what they can do.
