The United Kingdom is a political union made up of four constituent countries, commonly termed the home nations: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It also has several overseas territories, including Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands, while the Crown has a relationship with the dependencies of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. A constitutional monarchy, the United Kingdom has close relationships with fifteen other Commonwealth Realms that share the same monarch – Queen Elizabeth II – as head of state. |

Scotland (Gaelic: Alba; pronounced IPA: [ˈaɫapə], approximately "ALA-puh") is a nation in northwest Europe and a constituent country of the United Kingdom. The country occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain, shares a land border to the south with England, and is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the south-west. Apart from the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands.
The capital, Edinburgh, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Scottish waters consist of a large sector [1] of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. The Kingdom of Scotland was an independent state until 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union resulted in a political union with the Kingdom of England to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. Scotland continues to constitute a separate state and jurisdiction in Public International Law. Scots law, the Scottish education system and the Church of Scotland have been three cornerstones contributing to the continuation of Scottish culture and Scottish national identity since the Union. |

yeah.. but in my mind the idea of united kingdom being a country is nothign more than a technicality for international relations, each of the four countries still have their own governments and cultures and the people living there consider their countries to be the same countries as they always were. No one in the United Kingdom will ever tell you that their country is the united kingdom or even consider it. Technically to say it's a country is correct though. That I didn't realise, politically I can accept that but socially I would never refer to it this way cause I know they don't themselves. Anyway, you learn somethign new every day. |

well if people's quality of life can be judged by their suicide rates, then Hungary and Finland are the ONLY two places in the world worse than Quebec. That seems like retarded logic. maybe certain cultural factors are at work here. |
