Playing my song on the radio doesn't mean I give up all copyright for it. Printing a poster of a photo I took and putting it up in a public place doesn't mean i've released all rights to it.. and no, you don't have to "copyright" something with the government for it to be so. If i wrote a book then someone published it without my consent that would be illegal. you obviously haven't been here long enugh since there were a ton of people who wanted carl banned.
