Ritalin is what they give in cases that don't need something as strong as adderal, or just what they give in the case of canada where adderal is "illegal"

Most absolutely not. Ritalin doesn't make you speedy if you actually have ADD/ADHD, but speed will make you speedy either way. There's nothing worse you can give someone with ADD I think, they're just more likely to over-load with thoughts, and go crazy. The point of ADD meds is to improve concentration and minimize having too many thought processes, relaxing the body helps that a lot.

Just to make one thing clear ADD/ADHD means you have the inability to concentrate, not that you can't understand. The idea is to slow down the body and mental processes, not speed them up. Ritalin will put you in a relaxed state if you have this disorder, it will only speed you up if you don't. Speed doesn't react in the same way. Even valium would be a more effective solution. Giving speed to someone with ADD is like giving coke to someone with heart problems. Lots of people are misdiagnosed probably because nobody wants to tell a parent that their kid is just plain stupid.

adderal (amphetamine) is the first on the list (granted it's in alphebetical order)

Amphetamines are perfect for someone who can't concentrate, especially people with ADD/ADHD. Ritallin is an upper, the only reason it seems to be a "downer" to calm down ADD/ADHD people is because their thoughts become more coherent. With amphetamines, it's the same thing as with medicinal uses of MDMA; we're used to thinking in terms of recreational doses, which are much, much, much higher (and more dangerous) than what would be prescribed by a doctor.

Why is this drug prescribed?

Adderall is prescribed in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the condition in which a child exhibits a short attention span and becomes easily distracted, overly emotional, excessively active, and highly impulsive. It should be used as part of a broader treatment plan that includes psychological, educational, and social measures. An extended-release form of the drug, called Adderall XR, is available for once-daily treatment of ADHD.

The regular form of Adderall is also prescribed for narcolepsy (uncontrollable attacks of sleep).

Whether or not you have ADD, speed/ritalin will defintely improve your concentration and mental focus. Its not uncommon for college kids to take either speed or ADD medication and churn out an essay overnight. Personally, I've taken a small amount of speed while writing a brutal multiple choice exam (100 questions in 3 hours, worth 100% of the grade) and aced it.

Okay well I was curious to how it worked and I read up on it. The case remains that ADD/ADHD is due to over-activity of the brain. The way that stimulants work to improve the situation is by giving motivation and sparking interest in things that woudl otherwise not seem interesting. Also, by supressing the activation of brain cells that will interupt thought processes.

"Using a technique called positron emission tomography, or PET, researchers at Brookhaven's Center for Imaging and Neurosciences studied dopamine levels in 11 male subjects. In two sessions, the volunteers were each given a dose of Ritalin, calculated using their body weight to correspond to the doses given to children with ADHD, or a placebo. While their brains were scanned to record dopamine levels, the subjects were asked to rate their feeling of restlessness and "high." Meanwhile, physicians monitored each subject's blood pressure and heart rate.

The results showed that brain dopamine levels increased significantly approximately 60 minutes following ingestion of the drug as compared to the placebo. "We now know that by increasing the levels of extracellular dopamine, you can activate these motivational circuits and make the tasks that children are performing seem much more exciting," said Volkow. "By raising that level of interest, you can significantly increase the ability of the child to focus on the task."

Volkow added that Ritalin also works to suppress "background" firing of neurons not associated with task performance, allowing the brain to transmit a clearer signal. "Random activation of other cells can distract you, and children with ADHD are easily distracted," she said. "Ritalin suppresses that background firing and accentuates the specific activation, basically increasing the signal-to-noise ratio and increasing a child's ability to focus."

Volkow is now planning a follow-up study of subjects suffering from ADHD. "We hypothesize that we will find that ADHD sufferers have decreased function of dopamine circuits and are therefore easily distracted," she said. "The effect of Ritalin should be to normalize these levels, allowing them to focus and pay attention." " for full article [ www.sciencedaily.com ]

when I said over-activity of the brain, btw I didn't mean I.Q. Both very high and very low, and moslty average I.Q's are found in ppl with ADD, it doesnt seem to affect or be affected by this, something I didn't realise.

it's a stimulant but it's not an amphetamine

i think aderral might be banned already, not 100% sure, but aterral is an amphetamine and thats why it works so differently from ritalin.

adderal is bad news. i survived on it for my first year of university knowing next to nothinga bout it, except that i could do 12 hours of work on a single 30 mg extended release capsule. after a while it didn't work the same way it used to, i'd get really distracted and uselessly cracked out after. if i take it now it makes me sick to my stomach and nothign really good happens. later i found out that adderal is not actually a single amphetamine but rather several different kinds working together, so in a lot of ways adderol is actually kind of dirty.... not to mention really addictive. i thought it already was banned.
