Yeah, your totally right. No one will EVER develop [ www.extremetech.com ] Physics Processor for computers.
What do you think they code these games on? COMPUTERS! For them to code the game, they need the hardware working in a computer, and if the technology to get a PPU into a gaming console is affordable, what makes you think they're gonna keep it locked up when they could be making a ton of money selling it to gamers as the next big thing. |

these games are developped on pc for sure. I'm talking about owning the actual thing. A home user will not afford the high end PCs game developpers use.
And yes, PC need to be compatible with so much shit that they are startign to be the ones catching up on consoles. It is a very well known fact in the game industry, and every company is takign steps in that direction. I'm saying that before, things were introduced on PC, then the console would take it, the opposite is starting now. Also, a CONSOLE IS FAR FROM A PC, exept for the shitty xbox. The architecture is completly different. Remember that the pc's architecture is already so old and bad, and that it is still used is a shame. Consoles innovate on archi., PCs dont. i'm not just inventing that. |

hahahahahahahha
dude, consoles are just trimmed versions of a computer. you can run linux on both the xbox and someone even managed to install it on their gamecube. all hardware used in consoles is/was already available for pc's well before it was considered for a console. hardware manufacturers designs their hardware for a much larger audience than the console market. there are hundreds of millions of computers in the world, there are far fewer consoles out there. |

Nope, they totally aren't loaded with chips and stuff specifically designed for doing calculations and outputing the results on a screen.
Nope, doesn't sound like anything similar is going on in there! |

i think we should redefine the word "computer" to mean "old cruddy beige boxed thing that isn't as good as a console for playing games." |

ok, i might not be clear (its a big possibility, years of drugs got me troubles in organizing my thoughts).
what you are saying is what every sheep has been repeating. It was true. I'm saying that from now on, its not true anymore. Just like supercomputers arent PCs, consoles are becoming something else. also, dont ever mention the xbox in a discussion like this. Xbox is a PC. Everyone who bought that got fucked over. They could have bought a pc instead. PS2 is not a pc. Its not a pc architecture, and you cannot port games from ps2 to pc with ease. Not because of the OS, but because the hardware is not set up the same. We are starting the era where the pc will not be able to emulate or incorporate all of the console technology. on a related note: why do you think there is NO ps2 emulators for PC? I mean, its not like current pcs cannot handle the graphic/cpu load? Maybe its because a relevant comparison would be trying to get a submarine to act like a car? |

None of them PLAY the games, but they load them and emulate the hardware. The NES, the Genesis, the Gameboy, those were also all "not PCs" (unlike the Xbox) so how can they be emulated so easily? While AMD and Intel are busy going into dual-core technology, there's another company (who's name evades me at the moment) working on an 8 core CPU. |

i don't know how many times i have to say it. a console (modern ones at least) are all toned down compact versions of a computer. |

no they are not, it is my domain, i'm sure i know, bla bla bla :)
ps2 emulators cant play the games because they cant emulate right (yes, i have checked them all today). i didnt say genesis nes etc fit my description.I say we are starting to see this become true with the new gen consoles. dual core or whatever is still pc architecture at the base. |

Consoles are computers, even the NES was a computer. In japan they released it as the famicom, or family computer. It even came with a keyboard. The NES uses the MOS 6502, the same chip as the apple 2.
I head they were using apple g5's for xbox 360 development. |

Haven't seen anything running on the cell processor though, I wouldn't be surprised if killzone looked that good, it's going to be a year before it comes out anyway... |

ever heard of those Hurricane or Thermonuclear astrophysic simulations by those super computers.
they made a supercomputer, Deep Blue, just to play chess. the difference between pcs and console is not in the hardware, nor the software, it's in the business model. The reason they next generation of console, Xbox 360 and P3 will sell under 1000$ is the fact Micro$oft and $ony is employing the Gilette selling model. Sell the razor for dirt cheap, make money off the razor blades. |
