they actually did pay 9$!

you subtracted 2 from 30 to calculate what they paid, but they actually paid 30$ to begin with and then received 3 back, so it should be 30-3
because the 2$ the bellhop took was already paid by the customers. understand? They paid 25+2, not 25+3 because 3 is what they got back, the bellhop kept the 2$.

30-3=27/3= 9$

You made the same mistake they made in the riddle to confuse you:

So they PAID 27$ (25+2), and if you add what they didnt pay (3$) you do actually get 30. the extra dollar is because they added the 2$ the bellhop kept to 27 (making29), BUT they should have actually added the 3 they got back to the 27 to make 30.

So the answer to the riddle is that there was never a missing dollar but rather a confusing miscalculation.

Yes! Although I guess the acceptable answer is the math just doesn't work. It sounds like it does the first time though and that's why it is confusing. You got it figured out though, and I think neoform understood too. It's just hard to explain.
Try this one!

Why does a mirror reverse left and right, but not up and down?

This plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes a total of $29. What happened to the other dollar?

they really don't pay 9$ each...
seeing as they paid 10$ each
30$

get 5$ back
therefore: 30$-5$=25$ so they paid 25$/3=8.3333$ each...
give them each a dollar back and they all pai 9.33333$
leaving 0.66$ from each of them
and 3*0.66666$= 2$
thereby covering all 30 of the dollars

the math doesnt work...
i got that in grade school and i ravaged my teacher for telling it... he was trying to convince me (fool me) but i wouldnt fall for it...
