What exactly is your beef with the fact that bursaries are being turned to loans?

i'm totally okay with that decision

if you take your education seriously, you know it's the most valuable thing to your name.
why not pay it back? pay back the 12 000.
the fact that you have a university degree gives you a much higher salary than you normally would anyhow.

depends what you're in

depends what youre in???????????

hey so solly cholly. pick a program that isnt useless and that will actually guarantee you some money after graduation, instead of treating school as a 4 year daycare program paid for by everyone else but you where you get to make wine and baskets and paint purty pictures.

i actually dont' take loans or bursaries. ('m just standing up for my bf who works really hard but depends on those and know for a fact that he couldn't possibly do any more than he already is).
my parents do pay for my school, but that doesn't mean that if i had to pay for it myself that i wouldn't be doing what i already am.

from the McGill Daily, as reported in today's gazette:

"if these striking students can't manage to balance their chequebooks every month or can't stomach a healthy debt load, maybe university isnt for them."......." It's time these navel-gazers figured out how to string the words 'personal', 'financial' and 'responsibility' together."

well all i have to say is there are people out there that have a job, go to school, have a car and have NO student debt. these are not stories fabricated by the govt to undermine the students strike or whatever. the fact is, there are people out there doing it. they exist. it's possible. if you can't do it, then you should examine your life, where your priorities are at, and how much real sacrifice you're actually making.

I spend 40 hours a week working *yes i work for my father, so it isn't that stressful, but i continue to work 40 hours a week, while going to school at night.

When i was at Concordia i did the same.

My parents don't pay for anything of mine, nor does the government.

I do think people who still go to school full time should get a job, the bursaries should be a smaller amount. Maybe the students pay half their way and the government helps out the other half.

gneh whatever. No one is giving me any money, so i don't care if you lose your bursaries.

ya but jeff, you make a lot more than most people going to school. most people make minimum wage which barely accounts for all costs of living. its hard to work and go to school fulltime. and manage to have a life in the intrim.

10$ an hour is a lot?

And if they are university student, then they can easily get decent paying jobs.

it depends tho. the option is available because some people dont have the same opportunities as others.
for sure some people abuse the luxury of bursaries etc, but it is there because some people truly need it.

when i was at Concordia i was making 8.50 and hour. I did fine. I just learned not to waste my cash on drugs, booze and parties while in university. I pulled really good grades as well.

Also all my friends who are in university work full time and have 4-5 classes. Some of them are in the granduate program for journalism, others in business, another in philosophy, some in cinema and they all work full time at offices or for other places. They all do really well, half of them live on their own.

What are they doing right that the people who need bursaries aren't?

no... you didn't... and if you did, you're obviously illiterate and should DEFINITELY NOT be getting a bursary anytime soon

what most people have been agreeing on here is that TOO MANY PEOPLE, who would otherwise be able to afford school but are too lazy to get a job, are TAKING ADVANTAGE of the bursary program
*I* am paying taxes for some lazy fuck to go to school for free? no fucking way... (and yes i pay taxes even though i'm still a student, i made a lot of money this summer and reached a higher tax bracket... and yeah, i worked all summer, 2 jobs even, at one point I had 5... and i havent worked a day since september 4th)

You'd be complaining just as much if there were social programs set up for large companies wherein they feed them tons of cash for little reason, right? (not to say that there aren't)

dude this exists already it's called government.

i cant believe you guys.
The state is there to help support poorer people and it should stay that way. If your framework for society is self-help and individualism, you can move to the states. Quebecers react when you take something away which was fought for and its gonna stay that way, get used to THAT.

I never thought that i would vote for the PQ, but thats what i'll do. The Liberals are going down for sure.
