'Gonzo' writer Hunter S. Thompson found dead

[ CTV.ca ] News Staff

Hunter S. Thompson, the prominent countercultural writer who personified "gonzo journalism," has reportedly been found dead.

He apparently died of a gunshot wound. Police do not suspect foul play.

It happened Sunday evening at his home near Aspen, Colorado. Thompson was 67.

"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," his son Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis confirmed the death to the local newspaper.

Author Hunter S. Thompson Kills Himself

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his home, his son said. He was 67.

"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

Juan Thompson found his father's body. Thompson's wife, Anita, was not home at the time.

Besides the 1972 drug-hazed classic about Thompson's time in Las Vegas, he is credited with pioneering New Journalism - or "gonzo journalism" - in which the writer made himself an essential component of the story.

An acute observer of the decadence and depravity in American life, Thompson wrote such books as "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" in 1973 and the collections "Generation of Swine" and "Songs of the Doomed." His first ever novel, "The Rum Diary," written in 1959, was first published in 1998.

Other books include "Hell's Angels" and "The Proud Highway." His most recent effort was "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and The Downward Spiral of Dumbness."

I think he knew too much about drugs to overdose...

He lived like a beast all these years and couldn't handle just being a man...I guess...

Anyone knows where I could get my hands on "The Rum Diary" ?

call me a conspiracy theorist, but his latest book is a direct accusation on the bush shenadigans ( i've heard. Now i gotta go and get it before the book-mobs get there first). It would go with the attacks on defense lawyers ( basically the states are accusing a defense lawyer of being a terrorist because she emmited press communiques from her client. It's fucked up.) waay up there with the silensing of any dissident movement. even today the press is heavely censored in the states, like you would not believe. Americans are actually turning to canadian and european news to get the real deal on world events.

It doesn't make sense at all for him to shoot himself.

heh. too bad. theyre going to get the same filtered down censored bullshit as they might get in the states. they'll get the real deal on such ground breaking stories as the malfunction of the xbox powercord, a top story on radio news one day last week. pathetic

ya, i wouldn't have been surprised to hear that hunter s. medicated himself to death on some fantastic final drug cocktail ala Timothy Leary, but this? shot himself? unbelievable.

I believe his will calls for his body to be cremated and then shot out of a gigantic metal cannon (yet to be built) in the mountains behind his ranch, the cannon shaped like the double-thumbed fist that sumbolizes gonzo journalism, and the ashes strewn over his property while the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man" is playing. I wonder if that will happen, if we'll hear about it, or find out either way...

RIP

This is the first I hear about this guy. I'm asking myself who he is too. No matter who he is though... it's totally possible he killed himself.. however... people should not just assume its the case.
