Phil York is one of the fastest rising DJ’s on the Scottish club scene and arguably the biggest hard-dance name North of the Border. At the age of 22 and having been DJing for close to ten years already with a great passion for the music and a determination to make a name for himself in the global hard dance scene has seen him gain recognition amongst the scene. Phil started off his career after moving up to Edinburgh in 2000 from his home town of Newcastle and noticing a gap in the market in Edinburgh for the music that he loved. He got together with a few friends and formed his first midweek club, Naked at the legendary Wilkie house. Being such a fresh night run by clubbers it was a roaring success having Scottish debuts for dj’s such as Lisa Lashes, Lee Haslam and charlotte Birch. Naked was also the first Scottish club to bring Sundissential and Tidy trax up to Scotland. Phil also gained a residency at Shift running at the same venue where he played alongside dj’s such as Ziad, Malcolm Duffy and Vinylgroover. After six months of running naked Phil joined forces with Jason Cortez (currently running midweek nights in Edinburgh) to launch their own monthly Friday night club, and so Nuklearpuppy was born in June 2001 starting off at a small three hundred capacity venue with two rooms hosting a diverse selection of music from tuff house to trance and hard dance. Phil held his own at the club playing the last hour after guests such as Spencer Freeland and Jon Langford, keeping the dancefloor packed till the end. At the beginning of 2002 Nuklearpuppy’s success caused it to move to it’s current home, a much larger club on the other end of town; Ego. In the two years at Ego the club has grown to become arguably one of the most popular nights on the East coast of Scotland having hosted dj’s including judge Jules, Anne savage, Fergie, Yoji Biomehanika, BK, The tidy boys, Rob Tissera, Nick Sentience, Adam Sheridan to name but a few. Playing alongside all of these guests Phil has had to become more diverse in his sound and now plays tuff and hard trance as well as hard dance giving more variations to his sets. This has given Phil the ability to play various styles to suit best the club and crowd he’s playing to. Recently, the clubs growing reputation for successful, packed out events has seen it pick up nominations by Mixmag for ‘Best Scottish club 2003’ & from The Hard-dance awards for ‘Best small club in Britain’. In nearly three years Nuklearpuppy has run over 100 events & tours across Scotland in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Fife, Inverness and more, entertaining countless clubbers along the way Out with Nuklearpuppy tours Phil’s success as a dj has lead him to break into the English club scene with recent gigs at Storm (coalville), hardtimez (Leeds), XS (Middlesbrough) and spoilt rotten (Newcastle). Most recent achievements include playing the midnight set at inside out in Glasgow on New Years Eve to a sell out crowd and then Goodgreef vs. promise new year’s day on the tuxedo princess in Newcastle. Due to the recent Mixmag nominations Phil and co-promoter Jason are taking the club on tour across the U.K in March and April with bookings so far in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Oban Inverness Storm(Coalville), Digital(Lincoln), XS(Middlesbrough), Xstatic(Wakefield), Hotdog (Nottingham) and Heat(London). As well as running the most successful hard-dance nights in Scotland and having a thriving and hectic DJing career Phil is now venturing into production. His first two tracks which he produced with co-promoter Jason Cortez have been picked up quickly with the first being released on the highly respected Recharge records. ‘Freaks’ was released on Recharge in December to critical acclaim in the music press, with Mixmag’s reviewer Guffy putting it at number 3 in the hard-dance review section in January’s issue, saying that the track was ‘A techno influenced hard-house number that oozes atmosphere, with a big piercing vocal and some twisted effects helps this hit home’ Their second release is due out in April on London club Heats new label. The track, ‘Reality’ will be the labels second release, and is sure to share the same success as their first release. On a slightly trancier vibe, the track has been getting support from some of the scenes leading figures including Phil Reynolds and Nick Rafferty. Phil and Jason’s two new tracks my world and 88MPH have also recently been signed to nukleuz due out in May. Phil and Jason have also been announced to remix the new Lisa Pin-up track due out on nukleuz in late may. Phil had also been busy producing tracks with Goodgreefs newest signing Gaz West, producing tracks which are best described as a fusion of hard dance and hard trance giving a very energetic and uplifting feeling to the tracks. Their first collaboration – save our souls was signed to the goodgreef album released in October 2003 and is being released on Phantom tracks with a trancier B-side (lost in space) due out in April. Other signings include ‘Rushin’ and ‘The truth’ being released on redemption in April, which has been getting plays from all the major players including Anne Savage, Eddie Halliwell and Alex Kidd and Bad Idea which has been signed to nukleuz. Also four new tracks have been signed to phantom trax and will be out later in 2004! Phil is also responsible for the bootleg of Matt Darey’s liberation which has been doing the rounds in clubland of late with plays by Eddie Halliwell and polysexuals Hinsley. With even more dates booked into the studio this year it looks like you’ll hear a lot more of Phil York in 2004! Other highlights in Phil’s career include a cover mount cd mixed with Jason Cortez and double page feature in August’s issue of M8 magazine and a guest mix in December on Scotland’s premier dance station beat 106. Phil’s dj schedule for the first half of 2004 is already filled up with residencies at all Nuklearpuppy events in Scotland as well as a residency at Lashed Scotland kicking off this year in Glasgow and also two bookings for the infamous tidy events also starting in Scotland this year. Other regular bookings for 2004include Quality in Newcastle, Xstatic in Wakefield, Storm in Coalville and North Gathering in Manchester. Phil’s future plans for 2004 and beyond are to push further south with his DJing in the UK including the south coast of England and London and also to secure a residency in Ireland for Nuklearpuppy. Phil also hopes to gain more respect internationally and has focused his views on production for this year to give him a greater international reputation. With many tracks being released this year, an ever increasing and hectic dj schedule including tours in Ibiza, Dallas and Australia and support from Mixmag, M8 magazine and 4clubbers.net it looks like this will be the year for Phil York.
