Parents worried about gas sniffing

RED HARBOUR, Nfld. (CP) Parents on Newfoundland's Burin peninsula have
asked the Mounties to help them with an apparent substance abuse problem.
People are afraid children in the community may be experimenting
with gasoline sniffing.

An 18yearold boy was found dead earlier this week after he apparently
inhaled gas fumes.

"Sniffing of gas I don't think is very widespread," Const. Ruth McCleashe
said. "Indications are that it's an experimental thing at this point in
time.

"However substance abuse on the whole has always been a problem and
something that we certainly need to look at and deal with as best we can."

McCleashe said a meeting will be held with parents to address the problem.
