QUEBEC (CP) Police have arrested 47 people associated with the Hell's Angels and Rock Machine motorcycle gangs, including a man they believe to be the head of the Hell's Quebec City chapter.

Nearly 300 RCMP, provincial and municipal police officers took
part in the raids in Montreal, the Quebec City area, BaieComeau and the
Eastern Townships region.

They seized a few weapons and small quantities of drugs.

Those arrested in the raids Wednesday and Thursday included Marc
Pelletier, who is believed to be the leader of the Hell's in Quebec City.
He was charged with conspiracy to traffic in drugs.

A police spokesman said the only disappointment was that police
had insufficient evidence to shut down the Hell's fortified bunker in a
Quebec City suburb.

Neighbors had been worried about its presence since a car bomb
exploded nearby last winter.

About 40 people have died in recent years in the deadly battle
between the Hell's and the Rock Machine for control of Quebec's lucrative
drug market.
