DALY HANGS IN BUT READY FOR BREAK

John Daly is taking his sobriety one day and one round at a time. The
flamboyant PGA golfer managed a remarkable recovery on Friday at the
Greater Vancouver Open after suffering an emotional collapse during his
round at Northview Golf and Country Club the day before. Daly, a recovering
alcoholic, showed no signs of the shakes that wracked him on Thursday and
sparked speculation that he might have to withdraw.

The long -driving Arkansas native fired a 1-under 70 on Friday, but missed
the cut after a 3-over 74 the day before. But for Daly it was a matter of
not giving up, going out and finishing the round, to the appreceiative
applause of the galleries at Northview.

"They seem to have an underestanding of what I'm going through," Daly told
reporters following his round. "I was pretty nervous. It was a tough day
yesterday, something that takes a while to get over. I was hoping to try
to make the cut for the great fans here, but I got a couple of bad bounces
and it didn't happen. But I hung in there."

Daly, 32, said he plans to take the next three weeks off at least. "All I
can do is take away from here that, hey, I went through a tough day and I
didn't pick up a drink," Daly said. "For me, that's the most important
thing."
