CANADIAN ACCUSED OF SENDING POT SEEDS

A Drug Enforcement Administration investigation into the distribution of
marijuana seeds led yesterday to the arrest in Canada of a man known as the
"Prince of Pot."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, acting on a warrant from the Western
District of Washington, arrested Marc Emery, 47, of Vancouver. Emery, a
leader in the B.C. Marijuana Party, was indicted by a Seattle federal grand
jury on charges of conspiring to manufacture marijuana, distribute
marijuana seeds and engage in money laundering.

Rodney Benson, the DEA special agent in charge, said Emery has distributed
millions of marijuana seeds to U.S. residents by mail.

Benson did not rule out the possibility that a raid yesterday on Emery's
pot-seed shop in Vancouver could yield the identity of U.S. customers who
could then come under investigation.

Emery, who is in custody in Canada pending extradition to Seattle, faces a
maximum sentence of life imprisonment under U.S. law if found guilty.
However, Canadian prisoners in the United States on drug offenses are often
repatriated to Canada, where they are quickly released because of more
lenient drug sentences north of the border.
