If I am not mistaken, in Canada bouncers are supposed to have their Security Agent Permit which is valid only for one year and can only be obtained through a request by your employer to the government. If everything checks out and you have a clean record, it will be issued.

Unfortunately I don't think all bars do it this way, they might be going through a physical security agency though as I often see bouncers working for different clubs on different nights.

There were quite a few people making their own at the time and we'd pay more, for the quality, but also probably for the risk of blowing up or having a biker related injury.

Still, there's gotta be a whole lot of garbage in em pills, I can't believe undercutting would drop the price to 15-20% of what it was 15 years ago.

wtf, is a client DID know shit about design then they wouldn't be hiring you! and the rest of that, well it sounds like some clients do go out of control... it happens in every business but in the end, if you don't provide a product the client wants, it's business lost for you, not them.

You've already proven that you don't know shit about design. I've got 1600 hours training + about a years experience in the field under my belt how much do you have?

Dude, if they aren't happy with it, then it's clearly not what they asked for. Logic.

Sounds logical, too bad that's not the real world. Client A wants a to revamp his logo without changing the concept. I provide the client with 3 designs and he chooses one and asks for a few details to change. I provide client A with what he demands, he shows it to his wife and she says she doesnt like umbrellas (the concept client A asked for). Client comes back and asks me to redo... well Mr. A you get to pay double because I have other shit to do than attend to your changing moods.

If client A had asked to change colors or have minor tweeks then he will still pay, but a regular hourly fee. Thats how we do business and that's how it's always been. Don't like it? Don't give a shit.

For every good designer, there's 8 crappy ones (i'm part of those 8 ;))

You are not a designer, you think you are because you own photshop and have played around with it more than the average joe.

That's not doing business the right way, who the hell do you think you are? YOUR mistakes should not be costing the client money.. I understand that graphic design is not an exact science but then it should be YOUR job, the pro, to make sure you're going in the right direction before putting in any time you can't take back. Otherwise you are not doing YOUR job.

Making sure I go in the right direction is my job, and I dont get paid for that briefing do I? That usually takes about 1-3 hours per contract. I ask questions and the client answers, if the client didnt supply the right answers it's not my problem, and trust me I write it all down.

Oh i have the technical skills, I just suck as a graphic artist, no skills.

ORLY? I guess you must know all the finer points of pre-press, all of the pertinent software and are an obvious pro in terms of typographical knowledge (pretty much what separates any run of the mill designer from a good designer). Which is btw technical knowledge and not artistic at all. The finer points of typography are a science and you dont learn it from a few tutorials.

Good god! When did I ask anyone to actually do anything for free? I mean, you were helpful in your first post in my thread... wasn't so hard to just touch on a few points and I appreciate it in case you didn't know... don't need you telling me how to throw my party tho...

I said that because you pretty much painted all graphic designers greedy. I ain't telling you how to throw your party, but you'd probably be a little pissed if every moron promoter thought they could DJ and decided to spin instead of booking people... that's what a majority of small businesses do to people of my trade.

Is it bleed? Whats the total ink percentage of your darkest areas? Do your whites contain a bit of color so as to have a full coat of ink? And that's just off the top of my head...

Typo-wise, dont use Matura font, ever. You can easily use dafont if you wish, as long as you dont expect a full set of characters and subsets. I think that systematically adding a stroke looks cheap and you should use a more legible font and use it in reverse or in one solid color (never a gradiant... EVER). Maybe make your background lighter, especially on the reverse so that people can actually read wtf you wrote on there.

Seriously though, strokes are ok, I use them all the time on vectors and sometimes on typography, it just shouldn't be rule of thumb.

I'd go with a nice sans-sérif, maybe less of a robotic/sci-fi font. Dig on dafont, or DL fontpacks off pirate bay. You arent making a shit ton of money off your partyso you'll never get sued for steeling the full Futura set or any other major font for that matter.

Also, you need more space between the names of the DJs and the pics, the pics dont have the same spacing between them which makes it look odd. I personally wouldn't even include the pics as they bring no added value to the flyer at all.

Anyway, I'll keep it at that.

quote up or shut up

flyer is formulaic like the party and any fee is a big fee when parties break even by the skin of their teeth... you know people say they'll do it for guestlist but expect to bring their 2-3 closest friends... and heck they'd deserve more but 4 peeps getting in free is 80$, not to mention that the graphic designer often feels way underpaid, creating a bad vibe of sorts... been there, don't want to do it again :\

I wouldnt do it for 10 guestlists...

I've had horrible experience with graphic designers who charge 50$/h in my web dev job and never get the job done. You ask for a nice complete piece of work and when you notice how much it SUCKS they ask for you to double their wage to come back with something decent and then it's still not done so you're ten hours into something that they assured you would take 4, you're doubly over budget and you still don't have the whole thing done. Is your job worth that 30$/h average? Yes, if you deliver, but most graphic artists are spoiled brats who only deliver when you're already way over budget and refuse to give you the base materials you paid for until they get their ransom cash.

Erm no... Most clients are complete idiots who dont know shit about design and come back once you are done with what THEY approved and change the concept completely. Regular correction for the same concept is done at a regular fee not double, if YOU change the concept and the designer has to redo the whole fucking job then you do pay double, thats the way it is on every contract I work on period.

I have a schedule to keep and other clients to deal with that don't turn around and change everything because all of a sudden they aren't happy with what they asked for.

Spoiled brat? A good designer works hard for his contracts and to please his customers because what he does for you is worth it if it goes to his portfolio.

You wanna pay a fixed fee, then I aint correcting shit for free, you take it as is after ive worked for 3 hours and given it an hours time to do whatever the fuck you need from whats already in place. Not happy? Who cares, do business the right way or don't do it at all.

it's not fair for someone who is taking care of 5% of the event to make even close to half what I am making MAX IF things go really well. So yeah, it takes time, skill and effort but I'm not Apple here, I don't have a 4.3 million dollar Ad budget aight?

That is completely irrelevant, make more money with your event, find a way to cut budgets on other things than services you receive from 3rd parties. The guy you are renting equipment from doesnt give a shit if hes making 50% of whatever you get form profit, he charges a fee and you stfu and pay it. Same thing applies to your graphic designer. And a big fat 100-200$ is NOT 4.3 million is it?

I'm not paying my bills from any of this either so don't act like i'm a hypocrite or I'm trying to squeeze you and your talents out of all the juicy sweet nectar of creative awesomeness!

That's too bad, because I don't care. I am paying MY bills with these fees.

I didn't ask anyone to work for free, I'm not pretending I'm a skilled graphic designer or anything close. I post a pic and say:"Hey how could it be improved?" Am I really so evil for that?

Because sadly, these days any moron with photoshop thinks he can do a designers job to cut corners and save money. The end result is piss poor product for the masses and less jobs for us and quite frankly it pisses me right the fuck off.

Get a book learn the trade and do it right. Otherwise take out your wallet and pay someone to give you something good.

And for the record, I've done a ton of shit for free for charity. Your rave isn't charity, it's still business.

maybe something shitty happened between you two or something who knows 'shrugs' anyway just my opinion

Nothing shitty happened between us at all. He just made a thread about how he offers one guest list to graphic designers who made his flyers and got mad when they tried to get more than one. The guy bitches in this thread about promoters not paying DJs adequately and then turns around and asks for designers opinion on flyers he makes that look like someone with zero graphic knowledge would make because he's too cheap to pay someone to do it.

Why should anyone give trade secrets to someone who will basically try to do the job yet cant but will never admit to it for the sole reason of being cheap?

I'm sorry, but that's what I and many other folk do to pay the bills and a shitty ass 20$ guest list isn't gonna keep anyone fed.

You want good promo? You want a slick kick ass design? 20$/hr and 40$/hr for corrections if you change your mind once you've approved the concept and that's pretty cheap.

and thought I realize my comment isn't very constructive, I just think this whole 20$ business is pathetic, really pathetic. We used to pay LOCAL DJS a bare minimum of 100-120$ for a 1.5hrs set at a rave, how is it that in less than 10 years that rate has gone down?

That's pretty much what I was asking myself. One of the perks to spinning was that most of the time you'd get much better hourly wage than your regular job (if spinning was a sideline of course).

Promoters these days, apart for a few, seem to have bad organization skills and simply do bad business. Evaluate your costs, see where you can cut if need be, but the last place that should get cuts is the people who make it happen.

Anyways, my 2 cents, fucking promoters these days... they wont even shell out a dime to get good looking publicity either. I'm looking at you AlienZed.
