it doesn't take much prodding to convince me to drop a straight techno set... in fact, last summer I was dropping in at Laika on Saturday nights and throwing down in tagteam sets with Poontz and friends... it was great fun.

Due to school I haven't made it down there in a long time, but I'll probably start dropping in again once the semester is over.

I'd consider the text of Hollis Mason's "Under The Hood" to be more than just a minor detail... as I stated before, the film ditches a lot of the things that really flesh out the characters... and turns an epic that spans two decades into an action film that takes place in a matter of days.

It achieves the look, but fails miserably to develop most of the characters.

I can think of a lot of stouts that absolutely lay waste to anything that L'Amère À Boire has to offer... locally... I'd recommend a handful of the stouts at Dieu du Ciel... Grand Noirceur is amazing... and if you're ever there and see that they're serving an aged version... holy shit. I was there during their anniversary celebrations a few years back and managed to get a glass of one that had been maturing for a year and a half... best beer drinking experience of my life.

Saugrenue (stout with cherries) and Aphrodisiac (stout with cocoa and vanilla) are both quite solid, too...

for bottled stouts... the selection around these parts is pretty limited... especially when a lot of the stouts I've tried simply taste like black beers - which should never be confused with stouts! I've managed to track some great ones in my travels, though... Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout is mind-blowing. One of the strongest beers I've ever had (roughly 20%), but it hides the alcohol taste really well.... probably the best bottled beer I've ever had... Stone's Imperial Russian Stout is great... and I'm looking forward to trying sampling the bottles of the Rogue Imperial Stout that I've got in my beer cellar.

I'm still pissed that the original sale of Unibroue to Sleeman's was announced on my birthday. One of the worst birthdays ever... and then Sleeman's got bought up by Saporro... at least they haven't completely changed the direction of the brewery.

I was pretty disappointed, actually... it seems that they spent so much time making sure that it would look right, that they completely neglected making it feel right. Part of what made the Watchmen so great is that it's fundamentally different from most comic books because it deals with predominantly ordinary people who moonlight as heroes... cops, mechanics, soldiers, street people... and the focus is on their lives, their fears, and the general paranoia that there's an apocalypse coming and even the most powerful among them will be powerless to stop it. The film mostly runs away from any sort of real character development and makes the mistake of bending the story to conform to a more typical superhero/action movie stereotype - with some nudity to keep it edgy.

The use of music is, imho, intrusive and terrible... and at times there was a part of my brain wishing I could simply unwatch the movie so that there would be no trace of it to taint my enjoyment of reading the book again.

I'm not sure how big the scene is, but there's certainly enough people that can play the stuff... there seems to be a lack of venues for it, though... it's been a long-ass time since I was asked to play a set of pounding techno... which is too bad, 'cause it's fun to pull out old Drumcode, Re-load, Sheep, Zet, Subhead and such...

I'll never forget the time I was on the metro.. I was getting off at Mont-Royal and politely said excuse me to the guy standing in front of me. He made some room for me to get out, then got knocked into me by some guy who shoved him from behind. He said sorry to me, then slugged the guy who shoved him in the back of the head.

here is a paradox at the heart of your logic...

You're saying people shouldn't have the right to take away the freedom of others...

now... by extension, *you* can't have have the right to deny others the freedom of choice.

I'm saying - you can choose to eat meat, you can choose not to eat meat - but you can't make that decision for others. It follows the same logic as "you can pick your friends. you can pick your nose. you can't pick your friend's nose."

It *is* about personal choice. You can't fight against facism by turning into a fascist. It doesn't work. You've made your choice, that's great... and as empowered as it makes you feel, it doesn't give you some privilege to dictate what others can, and can't put into their bodies.

As for giving a shit about others... it doesn't really matter how much you care if you can't respect their right to make their own decisions.

y'know what I find strange... a bunch of people who have made up their minds about what they want to eat, getting preachy and bitchy about the fact that other people have decided to eat differently than they have.

being vegetarian is a personal choice... it doesn't make you better than anyone else, and it doesn't make you an asshole... it just makes you a vegetarian.
