the absolute worst I've experienced is biking back to Montreal via the Cartier bridge after work... and, due to all the people heading back to their south shore homes, there sometimes isn't much of a gap to pass people... so I got stuck behind some fuckin' tard in moth-eaten briefs, with his pants down around mid-thigh... pedaling as hard as he can, standing up, on his ratty-old BMX with tiny tires... effectively going nowhere, but succeeding in waving his ass in front of me... at eye level.

I was real happy when I was able to pass that particular stuntman.

seeing as I'm opening things up... I figure I'll put together something a bit different... packing a crate of some seriously early ISR/IST cuts (Turbulence, Laura Grabb, Spy) and some positively filthy hard acid (Zekt, Earthworm, Brixton, Walker) to set a nice, dark tone for the evening...

as an added plus... it's the kind of shit that tends to sound awesome when it echoes around in a big space before the masses show up...

some very impressive lists, here...

trying to avoid things that have already been mentioned...
Altered States - academics indulge in hallucinogens and isolation tanks... insanity prevails!

Angel Heart - Robert Deniro, Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet - plus some awesome old bluesman cameos!

A Boy & His Dog - Don Johnson and Jason Robards in a no-budget adaptation of a Harlan Ellison book.

Z00: A Zed & Two Naughts - possibly Peter Greenaway's finest moment.

Charade - '60s spy-spoof classic with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Forbidden Zone - Herve Villachez as the ruler of an alternate dimension + Danny Elfman as Satan... 'nuff said.

Hardware - cameos by Lemmy and Iggy Pop... plus a killer robot designed by Chris Cunningham.

Eyes Without A Face - mesmerizing... dark, twisted and brilliant stuff.

Silent Running - ok - the Joan Baez score sucks, but this remains one of the most visually amazing sci-fi films ever... with an amazingly prescient ecological slant.

Bad Boy Buddy - essential viewing for anyone who loves transgression.

Jesus' Son - junkie cleans up & goes to work with the handicapped... what?

Jefftowne - "The adventures of a 40-year-old, beer-drinking, porno-consuming wrestling fanatic with Down's Syndrome." I'm quoting someone else so you won't think I'm making it all up.

Peeping Tom - the hugely influential proto-slasher film that ruined Michael Powell's career...

The Conversation - one of the most paranoid films ever made.

maybe not every single pre-1980 Leonard Cohen - but a lot of them are quite impressive (and Beautiful Losers is a pretty entertaining and perverse read!)... but Simon Finn is also worth investigating... I think he still lives in Montreal...

some other ideas...

well... at least until the hallucinogens kick in about halfway through...

early 70's psych-folk from Stateside...

...and anything related to the original WickerMan soundtrack...

including those inspired by it...

+++
Elliot Smith, John Fahey.... and the incredible work of old bluesmen like Bukka White, Mississippi John Hurt and Skip James.

Cutterhead - we're not talking masters and such, we're talking physical stock; in some cases entire label back-catalogs. With the number of distributors shrinking over the past few years, there are only so many places that labels without the means to distributor their wares can turn to in order to service retail outlets, and a single distribution center serving a territory is far from abnormal.

Think what you want about Sony (I'm no fan of them either), but it's quite possible that PIAS was merely leasing or renting space in a warehouse that was already in the business of music distribution... anyhow, I'm not sure if masters were lost, but losing 30,000 copies of a record that was due to be shipping out that week is a lot for a label to absorb... even if insurance will cover the losses (and there's no guarantee of that), it won't compensate for the lost sales while titles are simply unavailable in a physical format.

I've had Czech homebrew Slivovice, which likely isn't too far removed from the Romanian variety... I think it upwards of 140 proof... fun stuff... we had a few shots of that at the end of the night and then ended up watching Altered States.

Clarification here... a George H. Bush appointed Supreme Court judge who tows the line on the sort of liberties the government likes to trample upon - or would like to trample upon in the future... One of the most lasting ways that an administration can leave the stench of their taint on a country for a period that extends well beyond their term is to place guys like Thomas on the Supreme Court.
