I despised that very thing about rap when I was 15 or so. I felt like evryone was just being sucked into the ploy of materialism. And in a way, we were, the media was feeding it to us. We needed to belong. The material goods helped make people feel like they fit in.

I don't disagree with you on the above. I mean, I remember when hiphop/rap was really popular in 1995 and I didn't like it because it was so materialistic/ consumerism/ conformity/ talk shit. Slowly I started getting back into it, listening to it and realized that it's not all "bleach"(if you know what I mean).


It's not just a product. Because all music compositions are products of the process that made them. It's that and this is maybe what you mean... it's that the "thug shit" is all about product. It's promotes product only! BUT the thing is product is nothing without process. And so that kind of music only gives you a slice of what is real.
